Zen Buddhism: Selected Writings. D.T. Suzuki. Doubleday. Challenged at the Plymouth-Canton school sys …

The Economist vuelve en su edicin de este viernes sobre la victoria de Ms Cristina Fernndez. 2007-10-29 21:10 New Thing #218: Fudge!*
There are a lot of surprisingly dirty mouths where I work. Perhaps it's not that surprising: we do live in New York, and we are often under a lot of pressure. We're heading into Deadline Time, so I've noticed a lot more sweary conversations than usual. Some of them even involve me. I don't think I cuss a lot, but I would like to cuss none, so I needed to come up with a plan to curb my occasionally naughty mouthedness. So today I made a swear jar. It used to be a cookie jar, then I ate all the co …

2007-10-18 03:50 On the other end of the spectrum...
After criticizing a too harsh approach towards gay/SSA folks, here an exposition of the other end of the spectrum - Commonweal readers comment on the Abp. Niederauer-transvestite "nuns" spectacle. I'm sure you've seen photos of these "sisters' by now, for more info you can go here. They are, btw, not all Catholic or former Catholic, you'll find "Wicca" as well, eg. I don't get it. If they were reverent in Mass, and not obviously protesting, and not obviously members of a protest group, what did …

2007-10-17 18:04 What's the difference between Larry and a penguin
"Only one of them gets cold feet!" Great photo of Larry being upstaged by Pingu here at an Oracle seminar where the wag headline writers and Rule69 bloggers can have a field day with a caption contest, however there's some serious antarctic tension brewing between the Oracle and Alinghi camps as the 22nd October deadline approaches. Both sides have gone deathly quiet, virtually shutting down their rampant PR departments so I'm sniffing a compromise in the rarefied air of the America's Cup at the …

THURSDAY, 7-8 PM @ The Greene Clinical psychologist JERRY M. RUHL, Ph.D, will discuss Living Your Unlived Life: Coping with Unrealized Dreams and Fulfilling Your Purpose in the Second Half of Life, the book he co-authored with Jungian analyst A. Johnson. We are all familiar with the words, If only I had... The regret is different for each of us, but the sentiment is universal. Every human experiences the disappointments of unlived life. In the first half of life, we ignore it. But when we …

2007-10-15 16:17 Looking At Spinebreakers
Last week, I mentioned the new Spinebreakers website from Penguin UK. I noted that it was pretty much everything I wanted a publishing website to be. Or, if you'd prefer, it's a publishing website that targets readers. The delightful message is less "buy buy buy" (or "sell sell sell") than it is "stay stay stay". With eyecatching colors and a mix of social networking features - video, audio, polling, discussion, and lots and lots of words to read - the site tells its target audience to stick aro …

2007-10-13 20:31 Loretta Chase - Miss Wonderful (an addendum)
Laura Vivanco I think maybe we need a soundtrack for this post, so here it is. It's Bonnie Tyler's Holding Out for a Hero .In a previous post I wrote about Loretta Chase's Alistair Carsington, an acclaimed war hero. Alistair and Mirabel's thoughts on what makes a hero can perhaps be read as being somewhat metafictional : "I am tetchy about being made out to be [a] hero," he said. [...] "Others did as much and more [...] My actions were nothing extraordinary. There were men who'd been with Wellin …

2007-10-13 16:23 take two
My four blissful days of Nothingathon officially ended this morning at 8.30am. I ran. Actually, to be completely truthful, Nothingathon ended at 11.14pm last night when I hit 'register'. Yes, I hit register. I am running the Grand Rapids Marathon on Sunday October 28, 2007! Why Good question. I need closure. Like at the end of a bad relationship breakup. After training for 18 weeks, running everyday for 100 days, there is a still a feeling of incompleteness (word). I know 100 consecutive days is …

2007-10-13 01:05 Club Penguin Cheats
Club Penguin is a virtual world where children can play games, have fun and interact with each other. Each player starts by choosing a penguin, giving it an identity, and then exploring Club Penguin. They can interact with other penguins by chatting, playing games, sending greeting cards, or using emotes (emotion icons) and using a set of predefined actions. By playing games, players earn virtual coins which they can eventually use to buy clothing and accessories for their penguin or furniture f …

If you gave me an award before, and have not seen me passing it on, well you are correct, I did not pass them yet. I am keeping them all in my blog vault and waiting for the right time and right person to come along, otherwise, the awards will be duplicated and some of you will have to stack up the same award many times, and then pass to someone special again and again. This is an excellent marketing scheme to get yourself well acquainted with the search engine - they say, not sure who are they, …

2007-10-09 20:15 The Mersey Sound
If you watched Sunday's South Bank Show on ITV you won't need reminding that this week is also the fortieth anniversary of the publication of Britain's best-selling, and arguably most influential, anthology of poetry: The Mersey Sound (aka Penguin Modern Poets 10) by Adrian Henri, Roger McGough and Brian Patten. Sure, the beats were great, but these guys were our domestic product, and they rocked. Hilary and I managed to see themn in the Festival Fringe a few years ago (oh God, I just checked an …

2007-10-09 01:31 A Wodehouse a Week #24: Ukridge
'I've been reading your book, old man,' said Ukridge, breaking a pregnant silence with an overdone carelessness. He brandished winningly the only novel I had ever written, and I can offer no better proof of the black hostility of my soul than the statement that even this did not soften me. 'It's immense, laddie. No other word for it. Immense. Damme, I've been crying like a child.' 'It is supposed to be a humorous novel," I pointed out, coldly. 'Crying with laughter,' explained Ukridge, hurriedly …
