2007-11-06 12:50  Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

2007-10-15 12:24  Snug Buggy Success
Last year, I received a message from Celeste Nossiter, a member of the Dropped Stitch Knitters Guild in Albuquerque. She and some other guild members had taken an idea, gleaned from projects around the country, and were doing a fund raising project called Snug Buggy .  Proceeds would benefit the S.A.F.E. House in Albuquerque, which is New Mexico's largest shelter and service provider for survivors of domestic violence, serving more than 1,600 men, women and children each year. The plan : partici …

2007-10-11 10:02  If only Malaysia has leaders half of Lee s Intelligence
T his is what you call a world-class leader, a person who can debate and argue with perfect common sense. What surprises me was how this 84-year-old Singapore former premier Lee Kuan Yew keep up-todate information using IT-technology and I bet he bring along his own PDA where-ever he goes. If only Malaysia has leaders with intelligence half this old-man, the country could do better than Singapore as admitted by senior Lee. And you don t have to wait for the year 2020 (or 2050) to become a develo …

2007-10-09 11:32  Deborah Schneider's Rajas con Crema
Some switch seems to have been flipped since I spent a few days in Mexico. Previously, I merely tolerated heat and hot peppers, craved them rarely - perhaps in the odd hot & sour soup or the bimonthly curry over on Lexington and 28th. I've never owned a bottle of hot sauce or spent time dreaming about making my own harissa. My father's the heat nut in the family, eating spicy food until he starts to sweat, shaking Korean pepper over his dinner plate every night. I've always preferred a milder me …

2007-10-07 20:15  What a Long Strange Trip It's Been........
As I promised this will be my last post on Coral Eugene Watts. I hope not to bore you all with this and I apologize that 98% of my prior posts were about Watts. But as I stated in my first post that I am not a true crime writer as of yet and only have my experience as a witness to a murder to give me the chance to write to all of you about things I feel are not fair being committed in the true crime genre. I hope you find this interesting since it is the first time I've publicly wrote about that …

2007-10-03 17:54  White House Collector
Set Charles Momjian is a major collector of many fascinating objects, including White House china and First Ladies letters, and it is a small part of his huge collection of White House china that is currently on display at the National First Ladies Library. As such, Mr. Momjian was at the NFLL last week to discuss his collection and I was able to listen to him speak. This is a man who is full of stories about Presidents and First Ladies and is a general delight to listen to. Mr. Momjian is a ret …

Could I enter into October 1st with any more goodness than today  Where to start  A giant storm rolled in at 2 a.m.  Wind, rain, the whole wonderful shebang!  Funny enough, September 30th was like a delightful Spring day.  Mr. Lovee had just returned from almost 2 weeks away.  The sun was shining, we hors d'ouevred under the sun, not too warm out.  Like a lovely Spring day... (don't forget it was over 100' degress for 3 months and impossible to be outside) Best of all, I am not in trouble for th …

2007-09-30 18:53  Happy World Vegetarian Month!
I think this is the first time I've blogged about breakfast! I usually eat homemade granola or Grape Nuts cereal with fresh or dried fruit, and during the winter I love oatmeal, but this summer I couldn't get enough muesli! The infatuation started at my sister's when we visited her in August. I ate her muesli (recipe from La Dolce Vegan! but you really don't need directions) and was hooked. Muesli is just raw oats (whole, not quick), nuts and seeds (I use hemp seeds, raw sunflower seeds, walnuts …

2007-09-27 13:39  The Effect of Architecture on Home Living
"Americans wonder why their houses lack charm...charm is dependent on connectedness, on continuities, on the relation of one thing to another.." "Houses have become utterly charmless, lacking in the capacity to inspire..." "The finest Gothic dwellings were sheer enchantments, passports to another place and time." (The above quotes are also included in the next to last chapter of Linda Lichter's book on Victorian life, "Simple Social Graces" or "The Benevolence of Manners." Both titles are the sa …

2007-09-26 18:13  Expensive œI Dos
It was time for me to take a break in my exciting afternoon schedule of folding laundry and scrubbing the kitchen floor.  So, I settled down in front of the TV with a bean burrito.  I happened upon a show called Platinum Weddings on the "WE" network.  I quickly realized that brain matter was starting to seep out of my ear and that I had broken my personal vow to erase entertainment television from my viewing plans.  So, I changed the channel to C-Span. Before averting my eyes from the ridiculous …

2007-09-26 15:29  Foodie Meme
As seen recently on Magnolia Mom 's blog... any meme related to FOOD is right up my alley! 1. How do you like your eggs Any which way, as long as the white is not runny (I think that's called "sunny side up"). I eat poached eggs, boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, eggs over easy (fried). 2. How do you take your coffee/tea Coffee with lots of Splenda and creamer. Flavored creamer. Currently have White Chocolate Raspberry and French Vanilla in the fridge. Tea needs a bit of Splenda to sweeten it also. I …

2007-09-26 11:45  Jim Barbarie s - Danbury, Connecticut
You would think that being the editor of Well Fed On The Town would mean that I get out a lot. Truth be told: I don't. I have a two-year-old at home and a crazy work schedule. It's a wonder that I remember to eat sometimes. Nonetheless, when my husband and I do get out, we like to make it worthwhile. For our anniversary this year, we headed off to a restaurant we've heard good things about, passed a million times, but have never tried: Jim Barbarie's. My first impression, from the outside, is th …

2007-09-24 05:09  Happy First Day of Fall!
Please scroll down to enter the giveaway !All right, there is nothing fall-ish about the weather here in Indonesia, but I still think that it is fun to celebrate the seasons! Here is the breakfast nook all set for our First Day of Fall breakfast! I made these, and they were so yummy. The centerpiece idea comes from Mrs. Wilt's posts last year about fall decorating. She's doing more this fall, so be sure to check them out! I decided to use pinecones with these tags for place settings. Just someth …

2007-09-22 15:46  An Alternative to Plastic
Apartment Therapy - Kitchen had a post a couple of days ago about glass refridgerator containers. Pretty, but pricey. I inherited a couple of my mother's pudding bowls and then picked up a few more at the auction (and then I had enough, so I stopped collecting!) and I use them for storing leftovers in the fridge. A bread plate works nicely as a lid and circumvents the whole plastic-container-lid-mess nightmare. I find that, because these bowls are breakable (and because some were my mother's, ve …
