2007-11-05 21:42  En koran du helst ikke må læse
The Koran is a very recondite, confusing, tedious and downright "weird" read for most Westerners. As far as substance goes, many non-Muslim critics –likely including Pope Benedict - over the centuries have maintained it adds not a single ethical teaching to those previously proclaimed by the other two Abrahamic faiths, Judaism and Christianity. As to form, most English translations leave much to be desired, and, to make matters worse, a number of Koranic-linguistic scholars claim that abou …

Admittedly, the torrent of "surprise" expressed in practically all the rest of the media over the elevation of the American South's first prince of the church has been, well, rather confounding. Par for the (press) corps, sure, but still .... See, even on Cardinal-designate Daniel DiNardo's first morning as head of the US' sixth-largest diocese (19 months ago), it was intimated on these pages that the red hat was already believed to be on its way to Galveston-Houston (...with the hint dropped ag …

Welcome to Day Two of full coverage of Red Dawn: Consistory '07. Starting close to home, still impishly humbled at the formal announcement of his elevation, native son Cardinal-designate John Foley told the Daily News what his surname means in Gaelic... and its significance to his new post: In typical Foley fashion, he took the news humbly - and gave a shout-out to Sister Elizabeth Gorvin, his eighth-grade teacher at Holy Spirit School, in Sharon Hill. The promotion, he said, is "more a reflecti …

In a historic moment that, as never before, underscores the significance of American Catholicism's gravitational shift to the South, Pope Benedict will elevate Archbishop Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston to the College of Cardinals next month. Head of the 1.5 million Catholics of the US' fourth-largest city, DiNardo, 58, was named as one of 23 cardinals-designate by the Pope earlier this morning. While the global list's second slot was, by seniority, given to Philadelphia's own Archbishop Joh …

2007-10-17 05:19  Pope Benedict's second encyclical completed
From Catholic News Service Pope Benedict XVI has completed his second encyclical, a meditation on Christian hope, Vatican sources said. The text, tentatively titled "Spe Salvi" ("Saved by Hope"), is about 65 pages, sources said Oct. 16. No release date has been set for the document. The working title comes from St. Paul's letter to the Romans, in which he wrote: "For in hope we have been saved." The encyclical is said to explore the Christian understanding of hope, with reference to modern philo …

Vatican City, Oct 16, 2007 / 03:10 pm (CNA).- Sources at the Vatican have informed CNA that Pope Benedict XVI will announce during tomorrow s General Audience that he will convene a consistory to create new cardinals in November. Currently there are 105 cardinals under the age of 80 that are a part of the College of Cardinals, which leaves 15 vacancies to reach the normal total of 120. In keeping with the timetable you're already well clued-in on, the Italian daily Il Messaggero is reporting that the announcement of a 24 November consistory and up to 20 cardinals-designate will likely be made tomorrow morning at the Pope's General Audience. In a little-noticed coda to the summer he devoted to a concerted reiteration of the church's social Magisterium, in late September B16 launched into two Angelus catecheses on the proper use of capital, and the dangers of its excesses. From the translations provided by L'Espresso's Sandro Magister, here's the text of the Pope's 30 September talk: Today, Luke's Gospel presents to us the parable of the rich man and poor Lazarus (Lk 16: 19-31). The rich man personifies the wicked use of riches by th …

2007-10-15 21:18  Henry Cardinal Newman to be beatified
From Catholic Citizens The Vatican is close to attributing a miracle to Cardinal Newman that would pave the way for Britain's most famous convert to Roman Catholicism to become this country's first saint for 40 years. Insiders in Rome believe that the Vatican will announce a decision within months, meaning that the former Anglican whose conversion shocked Victorian England could be beatified as early as next year. ... On Saturday, the Mozart-loving, piano-playing prelate you know as B16 paid a visit to the Pontifical Institute for Sacred Music to mark the 75th anniversary of its elevation to the status of a papal faculty, and the recent renovation of its home-base. (And on Friday -- as shown at left -- he blessed and reopened the famed Bronze Doors of the Apostolic Palace after a two-year renovation.) Saying that he came to it "with joy," at the Vatican's music school the Pope highlighted the richness of "the …

By Matthew Syed (THE TIMES, 10/10/07): Not satisfied with its divine undertaking to convert the world to its own version of Christianity, the Vatican has embarked on a new crusade. Through the Italian Conference of Bishops, it has bought a stake in AC Ancona, a third division Italian club, with the objective of injecting some œoverdue morality into football. œWe want to bring some ethics back into the game, which has been undergoing a grave crisis in terms of sportsmanship, Edoardo Menichell …

In addressing the Alpine ski team, Pope Benedict XVI said: "....when sport is practiced in the right spirit, and with respect for dignity, it helps to promote the development of the person. Sport helps man to consider his own capacities as a talent and his life as a gift of God. Even when sport is practiced at high levels, it is important to maintain an inner harmony between body and spirit in order not to reduce it to a mere search for results."
