2007-11-06 15:20  Del the Funky Homosapien Signs to Def Jux for New LP
Photo by Jason Bergman Because of his involvement in records like Deltron 3030 and the first Gorillaz album, it's easy to think of Del the Funky Homosapien (formerly Del tha Funkee Homosapien) as just a sci-fi rapper. But dig a little further back in his catalog (like back to his killer 1991 debut, I Wish My Brother George Was Here ), and you find an MC geeked on making genuinely quirky everyman anthems-- like "Pissin' on Your Steps", "The Wacky World of Rapid Transit", and "Sleepin' on My Couch …

2007-11-06 07:00  Photos: SunnO))) / Jesu [Portland, OR; 11/03/07]
Photos by Nilina Mason-Campbell The music at a show featuring both doom lords Sunn O))) and metal god Justin Broadrick's Jesu is plenty dark and spooky on its own, but add Sunn O)))'s trademark fog machine and you've got air as think as the drones. On Saturday night, Portland, Oregon's Hawthorne Theatre was transformed into a lair of pure eeevil thanks to both acts, leaving audience members woozy in the head and in the stomach. More photos and tour dates below. SUNN O))) JESU [MORE...]

2007-10-29 12:23  Monday Morning Uni Watch
It's good to see that all the finest aspects of pro football were on display yesterday in London, where the Giants and Dolphins sloshed around in the mud for three hours before adjourning for fish and chips. But Mark Roberts (or, as the wire service captions identified him, "serial streaker Mark Roberts") gave us plenty of Uni Watch fodder, even with his abbreviated attire. Consider: NFL officials wear socks with two white stripes, but college and high school zebras wear socks with Northwestern …

2007-10-15 02:54  Article in Edible Portland
I've got an article in the fall edition of Edible Portland about "wet-hops" beers -- a seasonal autumn specialty in the Northwest. Don't know how to explain it any better than I did in the story .... Winemakers have beaujolais nouveau the fruity, barely fermented red wines sold in November six weeks after harvest. And Northwest brewers have fresh or œwet hops beers, made from hops picked straight off the vine and added immediately to the mash. The result is a light, fruity brew that aficionado …

2007-10-11 06:09  Watch Where You Give Money to Panhandlers
In Grants Pass, when one's driving out of the Wal-Mart parking lot (the access behind Taco Bell), there's usually a panhandler there seeking spare change.  It's an organized effort--one of the "normal noises" in town.  There are panhandlers regularly at a few other intersections around here as well, like the northbound I-5 exit at Merlin.  Their signs aren't necessarily honest, but at least they're not as aggressive as panhandlers in urban areas like San Francisco and Portland.  Drivers and pass …

Written by history teachers with kids ages 10-14 in mind, Kidipede is a site where kids can go to research history topics for general information or as research for homework and projects. From North America to Rome, the Middle Ages, and everywhere in between, Kidipede gives kids easy access to history facts and information. 2007-10-09 11:56  NAAU is the time for Couture
Back in June PORT brought you the scoop by announcing the New American Art Union's series of stipend shows, where each artist gets $7,000 for producing a show that transforms the gallery space and $1,000 for materials. Now called Couture, the plan was an unheard of act of bravura, laying a direct challenge to The Portland art Museum's Contemporary Northwest Art Awards (which should announce its 3-5 finalists in November). It also allowed a commercial gallery to behave more like a non commercial …

Hat tip to App Fan blog for first posting this gem of a local YouTube mockumentary on the Jimmy Smith Park on Rivers Street in Boone, NC. Now the 60 by 20 patch of grass, rock and bench will be a mecca:) I met Jimmy Smith several times as he served on the Boone Town Council. He was also a beloved ASU math professor and taught i …

2007-10-05 11:07  Chris Robley Teaches Us the Drunken Dance of Modern Man In Love
As many aspiring hopefuls could tell you, the task of coming off as a genuinely expressive songwriter can be a grueling task. The general audience is often granted with the perception that, while many of these artists sing songs of brooding unrequited love and lonely intentions, there remains a likelihood that their fame, fortune, and recognition contradicts any assumption for a melancholic life. It begs the question: how could a successful musician sound so sad Well, though it sounds terribly c …

Mary Henry- Discrete Drawing No. 14 (Detail), Colored Pencil on Paper 1992 Image Courtesy of "Eleganty Frugal, Deceptively Simple" At Southern Oregon University I wasn't sure what I was expecting as I drove up to Seattle with my wife on an early on a Saturday morning in June. 2007-10-02 12:34  First Thursday Picks October 2007
Tom Cramer, "Aviary" This month, Portland's unofficial Artist Laureate is exhibiting his latest work at the Laura Russo Gallery. By holding on to what he understands as traditional creative values, "art driven by emotional content," Tom Cramer has become a bridge between Oregon's historical artists and Portland's young, hyper-new contemporary art scene. Cramer's current work blends painting and wood carving, building beautiful, labor-intensive reliefs that reflect the influence of his travels to …

2007-09-24 20:08  A Padded Room and Some Chocolate. Is That Asking For Too Much
I had a bit of an epiphany bright and early this morning. Yeah, brace yourself. It's a stunner. Here goes.... Doesn't menopause closely resemble mental illness at times I'm not kidding and I'm not being facetious and/or sarcastic. I've had about 3 days that, were it not for the fact I'm afflicted with menopause at this particular time in my life, I believe could have qualified me for a short, pleasant, drug worthy stay in my local looney bin. It all started Saturday morning. We got up, things we …

2007-09-07 17:03  How a relocation can change your outlook on real estate
We keep hearing how bad real estate is in certain parts of the country and how prices keep dropping. Did you know financial freedom could be as close as a relocation for some I have people that are moving to Portland from both Seattle and California all of the time and they couldn't be happier with the real estate market. Why, may you ask In Seattle, in some areas of the city, prices are twice what they are here in Portland, and in California the price may be as much as 4 times the price of a ho …

2007-09-05 20:50  Commercial Real Estate Prices May Drop 15% in Next Year
Experts warn that the boom in commercial real estate prices, fueled by cheap credit, is going sharply into reverse. Fitch had noted as early as April, and again in July that commercial real estate lenders were engaging in the same lax practices that led to grief with subprimes: 0% down, overly optimistic projections, deal terms that made sense only if you assumed price appreciation and a refinancing. Bloomberg reports that investors are holding back from closing transactions because they believe …
