2007-11-06 21:16  Terror-celle: 20 arrestert over hele Europa
En terrorcelle som vervet folk til selvmordsaksjoner i Irak og Afghanistan, ble sprengt av italiensk politi tirsdag. Cellens tyngdepunkt lå i Lombardia, men hadde forgreninger over hele Europa. 20 ble arrestert. De fleste var tunisiere. Politiet sier det bekrefter at området rundt Milano og andre steder i Nord-Italia er et senter for ekstrem-islam. Aktiviteten har pågått i mange år. "Once more, the central role of Milan and Lombardy in the panorama of Islamic militants has been confirmed," the C …

Colonization What effect did this enormous expansion in world trade have on standards of living across the globe Some believe that the explosion in world trade (and in international migration) put substantial downward pressure on the wages of labor in the labor-scarce land- and resource-rich parts of the periphery (North America, the southern cone of South America, Australia and New Zealand), gave a boost to real wages in labor-abundant Europe, and raised the returns to owners of capital on both …

Artist Maaria Wirkkala (born 1954 in Helsinki, Finland, lives in Espoo, Finland) has been invited by the curator of the Nordic exhibition at the 52nd Venice Biennale, René Block, to occupy the Finnish Pavilion. The pavilion was designed by Alvar Aalto (1898 - 1976) for the 1956 biennial. Since 1962 - when Finland moved to a common Nordic Pavilion together with Sweden and Norway - it has been used by Italy, Argentina, Portugal and Iceland. This time it is a satellite venue for the Nordic Pavilion …

I set up feeds of my flists from IJ, JF and LJ today, I'll add GJ in later, maybe, and then I'm going to read the lot of them from Netvibes. I've seen a number of good reasons why not multiple journals, and the two that are bugging me most are multiple entries and the scattering of comments. I've got a couple of people posting randomly to different journals as the fancy takes them, several posting everywhere, including to journals I have no intention of acquiring *G*, and some who seem to have h …

2007-08-20 20:40  The Vatican Gets Wings: Airline Routes for Pilgrims to Begin This Month
Well this headline helped me stave-off the urge to take an afternoon nap today. At least for now. The UK Guardian has the story in English: Vatican plans airways to heaven The Vatican may have territorial limits, its own post office and even a football tournament, but it has hitherto lacked what all real states offer: an airline. That will be put right this month as the Vatican launches its first charter flights for pilgrims from Rome to Lourdes, with some of the world's top religious destinatio …

One of many Italian salumi, bresaola originated in Lombardy, on the border between Italy and Switzerland. It is made by taking a beef eye of round (round steak section from a beef hind quarter) and then salting it and leaving it to air-dry for a few months. Sounds a bit risky, but I m sure the cold mountain air meant there wasn t much danger. Bresaola with rocket is one of my favourite snacks and is also the perfect starter for a dinner party since it doesn't involve cooking. You can mix the dre …

2007-08-18 04:29  American Beginnings
August 3rd was the 415th anniversary of the departure of Christopher Columbus and his small fleet west from Spain to China. On the way, Columbus bumped into the Bahamas, thus "discovering" the New World. The result was the Spanish plundering and colonization of the Western Hemisphere from Argentina to Florida. Aside from Brazil (ceded to the Portuguese), the New World could have been completely Spanish. But for various reasons the Spanish were not interested in the lands above 30 degrees north l …

Say goodbye Chardonnay and hello Falanghina! Or Romorantin! Mencia or, heck, Moschofilero! If you have just been waiting to venture of the beaten path, now is your chance to try an obscure grape variety from it's homeland! The justification is the 37th edition of the internet wine juggernaut known as Wine Blogging Wednesday and our theme is to "go native" and try an indigenous grape variety! Italy alone claims to have 2,000 of them. Spain has many, Portugal maybe even more. Greece is a hotbed of …
