2007-08-30 18:16 My Great-Grandfather's Grave
If I had to pick a theme for the family trip to Israel, it would be connecting. Connecting my kids with their cousins in Israel. Connecting our strangely out of place existence in the US with our roots in Israel. Connecting the stories of the Torah to the physical places where they occurred. Connecting our practice of Judaism with the land from which it sprang. Connecting the seemingly obscure laws of the Torah with the society for which they were written. Connecting the stream of Jewish cont …

Mishna The Mishna states: If a woman s husband and her co-wife went overseas and they informed her that her husband has died (based on the report, she would be free to remarry, however, it is uncertain if she falls for yibum), she should not marry or be taken in yibum until she determines if her co-wife is pregnant or not. If the woman had a mother-in-law who went overseas, we do not need to be concerned that the mother-in-law gave birth to a son, and now the woman will be subject to yibum to he …

CATALYST NATION by Rabbi Baruch Binyamin Hakohen Melman It is often said that we are a "chosen nation," based on the term in this week's parsha, that we are an "am segula." And sometimes "am segula" is translated not as "chosen," but as "treasured." But it also has a deeper meaning, a meaning which speaks very deeply to our special destiny vis a vis our special relationship with humanity and the nations of the world. Ignorance of the true meaning of the term has resulted in tragedy in both direc …

Today is the 13th of Elul, and the 131st yahrzeit of Rebbe Yaakov Yisrael of Cherkassy, one of the eight sons of Rebbe Mordechai of Chernobyl, and ancestor of the famous American Twerski family [of the Hornosteipel dynasty]. My previous post on him can be found here .*** Before our story about today s Baal Hilula [ yahrzeit ], I d like to present a short one, which is related, about his beloved grandfather, Rebbe Nachum of Chernobyl. 2007-08-24 03:11 The Red String
The Red String by Rabbi Ari Enkin Ramat Beit Shemesh, Israel No doubt readers have come across individuals selling mysterious red strings at the various holy sites in Israel claiming that such strings posses mystical properties. Perhaps someone you know wears a red string on their wrist. Proponents for the mass distribution of this red string claim that it becomes infused with mystical protective powers when it is wound around the Tomb of Rachel in Bethlehem while reciting a specific series of p …

DOING MY NAILS (and other appreciative gestures) by Rabbi Baruch Binyamin Hakohen Melman How important is it not to objectify members of the opposite sex How crucial is it that we preserve the intrinsic humanity of the other in spite of our drives which seemingly compel us to to view others as mere tools for our own self-gratification In our parsha this week, Ki Tetze (Deut.21:12) it says "...VE'ASTA ETTZIPARNEYHA... 2007-08-21 19:38 The War on Kaparos
Last week's discussion of kaparos in R' Gerson Tannenbaum's My Machberes column has already been discussed on several blogs. Let me just a focus on a few interesting points in the column: 1. R' Tannenbaum provides some background regarding the controversy surrounding the kaparos ritual by quoting R' Yosef Caro's well-known statement in the Shulchan Aruch that " the practice should be prevented." More surprising is the following statement: The Shulchan Aruch Code of Jewish Law, authored by Rabbi …

2007-08-20 02:57 Yehoshua Ben Gamla
Yehoshua Ben Gamla is famous for instituting that every town have a local Jewish school. For this, he is praised as having prevented the Torah from being forgotten ( Bava Basra 21a). However, after piecing together the history we find a much more complex picture. Nowhere is he mentioned with the appellation "Rabbi". The Gemara ( Yevamos 61a) states that his wife, Martha Bas Baisus, bought for him the position of high priest. Josephus ( Antiquities 20:9:4) describes a high priest Jesus Ben Gamali …

TWO HEARTS - ONE YEARNING by Rabbi Baruch Melman Two hearts for two mountains. Our Jewish DNA reflects the yearning to simultaneously ascend two figurative mountains: the universal call to serve humanity and the particular call to serve the Jewish people and in so doing preserve our culture, religion and heritage and be alone with our G*d. "VERACH HALEVAV YELECH VEYASHOV LEVEYTO...(Deut.20:8) ...and let the faint-hearted return home (rather than let his cowardliness demoralize the nation)." This …

The Gemora cites a braisa: Rabbi Elozar bar Tzadok said: I testified once in my life regarding the genealogical status of a person, and through that testimony, I elevated a slave to the genealogically qualified. The Gemora asks: Do you think that he actually elevated a slave to the genealogically qualified Hashem does not even allow the animal of a righteous person to transgress (referring to the animal of Rabbi Pinchas of Yair, who would not eat untithed produce); certainly Hashem would not bri …

2007-08-09 21:07 RE'EI
LIKE WATER FOR BLOOD by Rabbi Baruch Binyamin Hakohen Melman Native Americans honor the spirit of the hunted animal by drinking its blood. They recognize the spiritual nature intrinsic to the blood, and seek thereby to identify with its spiritual essence. The Torah, on the other hand, also recognizes the spiritual essence of life being in the blood, but at the same time forbids us from drinking it. In parshat Re'ei we are explicitly enjoined to not "eat" the blood of the sacrificial offering. Al …

2007-08-08 01:13 Israel - Rabbi Urges Better Pay for Shadchanim
'August 7 Pinned News' Israel - High payments to Shadchanim (matchmakers) could help solve the growing problem of late marriage in the religious sector, Rabbi Yehoshua Shapira, head of the Ramat Gan hesder yeshiva, stated. Shapira believes that if parents would be willing to spend more money to reward those who introduced their child to his or her future spouse, this could significantly change the matchmaking scene. In haredi society, for example, it is custom …

Happy New Years! Here is a short selection from my Qoton Qlassic essay about Tu B'Av regarding the relationship between Tu B'Av and Rosh HaShannah: Rabbi Zvi Elimelech Shapiro of Dinov (1783-1841) explains the Kabbalistic significance of the holiday of Tu B'Av. The Talmud writes that forty days before one's embryo is formed, Heaven declares who his future spouse will be. In Tractate Rosh HaShana, a dispute is discussed at great length between Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Yehoshua. Rabbi Eliezer maint …
