2007-09-07 05:29 President Bush/Condi Rice. Meet Asia. China Too.
Richard Armitage, former deputy Secretary of State under President George W. Bush, is of the strong view the United States is missing the boat in Asia. I agree. The Australian interviews Armitage in a story entitled, " China wins as 'US neglects region, '" on how President Bush and Condoleezza Rice have been ignoring Asia, to the United State's detriment. Armitage nicely analogizes current US foreign policy to five year olds playing soccer: "In every measure, China is making real hay right throu …

2007-09-04 19:37 APEC 2007: Another missed opportunity for the Bush Cabal
Iraq is screwing the US. It's sucking up all of our foreign policy experts and in turn, allowing China to supersede the US in the Asia Pacific Rim countries. Currently the 21 member nations/economies are all in Sydney at this years annual APEC leaders meeting. APEC in 2007 is offering something is a little different this year. We in the blogging community have focused in on the extreme security apparatus that the NSW government has erected to 'protect the leaders', which in turn is leading to th …

2007-09-02 15:20 Condi, AIPAC, and the A1 Cut-Out
by emptywheel You'll recall that the AIPAC defendants called Condi and Stephen Hadley to testify about how they routinely leak classified information. Well, the government claims that these two, at least, don't have to testify. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and other senior intelligence officials should not be forced to testify about whether they discussed classified information with pro-Israel lobbyists, federal prosecutors argued in a closed-door court hearing Friday. Two former Americ …

2007-09-01 19:03 Happy Birthday to Lil Pink Dancin Guy!
Ahhhhh Memories!!!! Yes, this is what happens when you have a Trish twiddling her thumbs in the hiatus between Christmas and New Years you know. She has time to THINK. And anyone who knows Trish will know this can be a dangerous thing! So on the 1st January 2006 she had a bit of a chat about it here and she *eventually* said: œAnd my message for today; if you read category romance and you enjoy reading it is this; be proud to say so! Which led to her *eventually* concluding: œMaybe we should e …

2007-09-01 14:07 No End in Sight: Filmmaker Documents How Iraq Became a Quagmire
Filmmaker Charles Ferguson is a former MIT prof who wanted to do a low-key, just-the- facts type film. I haven't seen it yet, but it's in town and it sounds like he succeeded and made a film well worth a viewing. Rob Thomas in Capital Times :Ferguson's expertise and scholarly background helped get him access to key figures in the Iraq occupation who probably wouldn't have talked to an overtly political filmmaker like Moore. Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, retired Gen. Jay Garn …

2007-08-31 19:16 No End In Sight
The first film of its kind to chronicle the reasons behind Iraq s descent into guerilla war, warlord rule, criminality and anarchy, NO END IN SIGHT is a jaw-dropping, insider s tale of …

2007-08-26 17:40 The Leftist Mind: Magical Thinking
Greetings puny Earthlings. It's time to take another dip into that political snake-pit known as THE LEFTIST MIND .In the past we've discussed how the leftist mind is essentially narrow-minded, bigoted, and fearful of facts and de bate, today we'll discuss where the leftist mind goes when its mindset is challenged by reality... THE LAND OF MAKE BELIEVE! Stick with me on this, we're not taking a trip to where the wild things are. We're going to show how the left, who brag about their subtle and nu …

It was just about a year and a half ago that Stephen M. Walt professor of international affairs and co-author John J. Mearsheimer of the University of Chicago (See Maybe Its time To Fess Up ) wrote the their little paper that accused the Jewish Lobby causing every overseas problem in the last hundred years except maybe the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. If you remember the story these guys published this paper as if it was approved by Harvard, but apparently the used the "stationary" without a …

2007-08-23 11:26 Is David Broder Really That Ignorant
Rove Unrepentant By David S. Broder Thursday, August 23, 2007; Page A19 Karl Rove exited arguing with everyone - so spirited in his own defense as he blanketed the Sunday talk shows that he hardly needs further assistance from anyone. The resignation he handed President Bush last week, 17 months before the end of their White House tenure, writes an equivocal ending to a controversial political partnership. But Rove himself is not about to apologize for anything - not for "outing" Valerie Plame W …

2007-08-22 13:54 Senior diplomats retaking foreign policy
By MATTHEW LEE Senior career diplomats are retaking control of key elements of U.S. foreign policy and have begun to assert significant influence as the Bush administration enters its waning months eager to salvage a legacy marred by the Iraq war. Since assuming the helm at the State Department in 2005, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has installed veteran foreign service officers with more than 200 years of collective diplomatic experience in seven critical posts from the Middle East to Sou …

2007-08-21 23:48 Sunday show hosts left key Rove scandal questions unasked
Deputy White House chief of staff Karl Rove, who announced August 13 that he will resign his position at the end of the month, appeared on the August 19 broadcasts of NBC's Meet the Press, CBS' Face the Nation, and Fox Broadcasting Co.'s Fox News Sunday. In none of the interviews, however, was Rove asked to reconcile the assertion by White House officials quoted in an August 19 front-page Washington Post article -- that one of Rove's "two basic rules" in putting together briefings for political …

2007-08-20 13:00 Has Gen. Petraeus become our new Ollie North
Recent revelations by the White House that the 'September Petraeus Report' will be written by the White House and its senior officials is absolutely ridiculous. Has the pot ever called the kettle black I believe not. This is a clear sign that Petraeus has succumbed to the power of partisan politics instead of his commitment to duty. White House officials suggested to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee last week that Petraeus and Crocker would brief law …

2007-08-17 19:30 FDL Movie Salon Welcomes œNo End In Sight Director Charles Ferguson
(Please welcome Charles Ferguson, director of the documentary No End In Sight, in the comments.) Last week, Sidney Blumenthal wrote: The release of a documentary on the administration's failures in Iraq, "No End in Sight," directed by Charles Ferguson, has the White House spooked. Bush's aides are not worried because the film is brilliantly shot and edited, or because it is compelling, but because of what - or whose appearance - it might augur to upset their September rollout. The film feature …

2007-08-16 09:46 North & South
This mini series was more than recommended by A. and T. as something I'd enjoy as much as Pride and Prejudice. So yesterday after finishing the first season of Veronica Mars I decided to give it a try, after all it was only 4 episodes long and I was in the mood for a period drama. At almost four in the morning I finally turned off the television, just couldn't stop watching, I had to know how it ended. The trouble I had getting up this morning was really worth it, what an amazing love story, I c …

2007-08-15 20:44 Weekly Podium - "No Mo' Rove"
(Cross-posted at The New Dominion )On August 31st, one of the most prevalent and controversial figures of the past 7 years will leave the White House and the side of President Bush. There you have it, the understatement of the year. Karl Rove has been many things while working for the Bush Administration. He's been a political genius, a master of backroom politics, controversial, confrontational, and highly influential. His influence in getting George W. Bush elected in 2000 was notable; his wor …

2007-08-15 14:19 Whatever Happened To Thomas Tamm Plus, Obama And Plame Game II
You can tell something serious is happening when a story blossoms and then goes absolutely silent. Only when it is a serious matter does the Federal Government go pitch dark on a subject. The latest was the search of DoJ Lawyer Thomas Tamm's house in regards to the NSA leak investigation. This is not the first time this has happened, the news of Mary McCarthy, the CIA leaker, was in the news for a few days before going cold as well. Not that I have any answers, but it is interesting to see the F …

2007-08-15 09:24 No End in Sight review
I finally got a chance to see No End in Sight, the Iraq documentary that opened this weekend. My take on it is pretty mixed. The film is very well produced. It's a little talking-head heavy, as a movie reconstructing previous government decisions almost has to be, but the quality of the interviews along with the excellent Iraq footage mostly make up for that. Although it brings up the question of why the Bush Administration decided to invade Iraq (and concedes it likely had little or nothing to …

2007-08-14 01:47 ABC Blames Karl Rove for Swift Boat Ads, All Nets Scold Him for Plame Leak
Reporting on the resignation of presidential political adviser Karl Rove, ABC's World News on Monday night absurdly blamed Karl Rove for the ads from Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and featured John Kerry's condemnation of Rove as all three broadcast network evening shows castigated Rove for his criticism of how Democrats want to coddle terrorists and highlighted his œleaking of Valerie Plame's name. ABC's David Wright cited Rove's œpolitical ju-jitzu in œturning opponents' strengths against …

2007-08-13 13:40 Rove Resigning Coverage
By now, everybody knows that Karl Rove will be leaving the service of the president at the end of August. The coverage of Rove's departure is sure to be yet another opportunity for the vultures in the 527 media to rehash "Spy Games"... Be sure to check the names in these stories... You will see the president, you might see Dick Cheney, you will definitely see Scooter Libby and probably Robert Novack as well. The name you won't see Richard Armitage, the guy who actually revealed the name of Valer …

2007-08-11 19:15 the best laid plans....
Recently, every time we plan something, something comes up and the plan goes down the toilet. Our plan (sort of) for this weekend...
