2007-08-24 04:00 Spanking creationists again
Another hallelujah chorus Answers in Genesis has tidings of great joy. The creationist ministry has announced the winners of this year's essay contest. The Research Challenge Contest for 2007 was designed to serve in part as a promotional campaign for AiG 's new (but already revised ) creationism text, Evolution Exposed. The rules required that the teenage entrants refer to the book: Write your research paper using at least one reference from the book Evolution Exposed and one reference from the …

2007-08-05 06:12 Readings for analysis and interpretation, sciencing
I acquired the original set of readings through recommendations from my Oxford tutor. I added others from my own experience, especially browsing authentic bookstores and open stack libraries. I combined them into a set for teaching a university course in statistical methods– Readings for quantitative analysis and interpretation in biocultural science, human biology, anthropology The course was an empirical introduction to analytical approaches to anthropological data. Basically, I wanted r …

2007-08-02 16:58 Conference-English Phrase Book
As those in the greater sociology community know, we are rapidly approaching the beginning of this year's American Sociological Association annual meeting. This year's meeting has the awesome theme "Is another world possible"* and promises to be several days of excitement as sociologists from all over North America converge to share the latest research. Okay, I'm kidding a little about that. In reality the annual meeting is effectively non-stop boredom punctuated by schmoozing, meals, and the ha …

2007-07-29 03:04 Web Communication Experiment: Blog vs. Facebook vs. Twitter
With some wickedly smart and prescient people having invested in Twitter and with Jason Calacanis having quit Facebook (high profile anti-hype is always an interesting sign), I'm going to invest some time in trying to figure out how to maximize the utility of these two applications, particularly for communicating on the web - Fred Wilson's right that communication is a big part of what the web enables. Currently, my principal platform for communicating on the web is this blog - I post ideas here …

Editorial Which are the best nations and institutions for revolutionary science 1987 2006 Analysis using a combined metric of Nobel prizes, Fields medals, Lasker awards and Turing awards (NFLT metric) Bruce G. Charlton Medical Hypotheses. 2006; 68: 1191-1194 *** Summary I have previously suggested that Nobel prizes can be used as a scientometric measurement of ˜revolutionary science ; and that for this purpose it would be better if more Nobel prizes were awarded, especially in three new subjects …

2007-07-20 13:23 'Pure' medical science
The future of ˜pure medical science: The need for a new specialist professional research system Bruce G. Charlton and Peter Andras Medical Hypotheses 2005; 65: 419-425 Summary Over recent decades, medical research has become mostly an ˜applied science which implicitly aims at steady progress by an accumulation of small improvements, each increment having a high probability of validity. Applied medical science is, therefore, a social system of communications for generating pre-publication peer-re …

2007-07-17 13:33 The Thinker s Toolkit
As an author I am always on the lookout for interesting new business books. I have just finished The Thinker's Toolkit by former CIA analyst, Morgan Jones. I can recommend it. He shows how systematic analytical techniques are much better than seat-of the-pants decision making. He explains 14 methods including some that I already use in my workshops. One of the most interesting thing I learned was that in comparing rival hypotheses you should choose not the one with most supporting evidence …

2007-07-10 16:44 Nothing like some good ˜ol 19th century science
With all the petsitting I've been doing lately, I've been able to obtain a few books that have long eluded me due to prohibitive prices. I know I may not even get to some of them for a few weeks, but I wanted to snap them up since the prices were the lowest I had seen them in some months. Anyway, here's a look at what will soon be entering my collection; The lying stones of Dr. Johann Bartholomew Adam Beringer,: Being his Lithographiæ Wirceburgensis - 1963 translation I first heard of Beringer's …

2007-04-25 10:58 Kripkenstein
It s always seemed to me that there is an obvious weak point in Kripke s discussion of Wittgenstein. I don t know the literature well at all so I may be making an elementary mistake or pointing out the obvious either way I d like to know. Kripke argues that there are no meaning facts because there s nothing to determine which of infinitely many rival meaning hypotheses are correct. Nothing about the world determines that I mean addition rather than quaddition by ˜addition, for example. In arguin …
