2007-10-13 05:06 Chapter 4: Everybody Dies
Chapter 4: Everybody Dies Six years before Jacob Mallow was a bright young man, the interviewer decided. His eyes were wide and always searching, so he looked lost, but he would probably contribute to some graduate program in bioengineering just not this one. The interviewer glanced at Jacob s folder and knew he wouldn t get in. His test scores and grades were as exceptional as those of any plausible candidate. Hell, he hadn t even heard of the St. Louis college Jacob had attended. On the …

2007-09-29 18:47 In Honor
You may remember from several weeks ago the NY Times editorial written by seven men stationed in Iraq entitled The War As We Saw It. They felt like America had outlived its "reluctant welcome", based on their observations. And then a couple of weeks ago two of the authors of the op-ed died, killed by a vehicle accident before they could leave Iraq. Now there's a fund being set up in honor of these men, to raise money for Fisher House, which provides housing for families of wounded soldiers. Way …

Hiho, If you're a Canadian Idol watcher and you see an episode where Brian Melo is at the Ronald McDonald House in Hamilton and has lunch with a family there... you may be watching my cousin. While her son was in the hospital there, they had lunch with Brian and CTV filmed it. Cu, Andrew

This is just a quickie to tide you over until I can come up with the most scathingly brilliant idea ever. Which may not be so quick, so don't hold your breath. My trip to the dentist brought both good news and bad news. Good, because all he did was put in my crown. Bad, because now I have to worry about those fillings next time I go. Or another crown. They can't make up their mind. Originally, this was supposed to be three fillings and a cleaning. Or the September one was supposed to be a crown …

2007-08-25 01:54 A thank you for kinda remembering
At the crowded reception that followed this week's funeral for former Charlotte Mayor John Belk, a reporter spotted former U.S. Rep. Alex McMillan ."Aren't you D.G. Martin " she asked excitedly. "No," McMillan responded, "I defeated D.G. Martin." The Republican beat his Democratic rival in high-profile and expensive races in 1984 and 1986. He went on to serve 10 years in Congress. But he got a good laugh at the mix-up. "All that money I spent on campaigning and marketing, and this is what I get, …

2007-08-23 15:11 Is This Thing On
I could easily pin my absence from blogging and podcasting during August on dial-up only access from my holiday spot. However, the hiatus was conscious decision. I chose to keep the laptop closed for 99% of time I was away, not reading, writing or basking in the glow of the screen at all (with the exception of downloading pictures of the kids to free up space on the digital camera's flash card). The hiatus even carried over a few days of being back at home. Disconnecting from the online world wa …

2007-08-22 23:08 Surgery Consultation Update
Here's the update I sent out about Lin's surgery consultation. Hi family and friends, I spoke with Lindley's surgeon for the first time today, and I thought I'd send out an update in case you were wondering what I found out. Not a lot unfortunately regarding dates. Here are the basics: On a scale of 1 to 4, 4 being the most severe leakage problem in the heart valve, Lindley is a 3+. Dr. Tam wants to do the surgery ASAP because waiting will only cause further complications in repairing the valve. …

2007-08-20 16:08 That Tortilla Artist Guy Has Finally Gone Out Of His Mind (And Taken A Reporter With Him)
Kudos (or curses) to William Booth of the Washington Post for doing quite the extensive profile of Mexican tortilla artist Joe Bravo, whom we've covered before cuz he managed to reach the most unstable of all the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Unfortunately, Booth has been sucked into the flour-and-lard caked whirlpool of his evil genius: Here he comes, wearing an Aztec mask, made entirely of tortillas, and in place of jade and precious stones, he has pebbled the headdress with kernels of corn. I m thi …

2007-08-20 15:42 Wikipedia and the Wisdumb of Crowds
Last week, Wired reported on a program that allows us to see who's editing Wikipedia. Invented by Virgil Griffith, a graduate student at Cal Tech, the WikiScanner has finally brought transparency to the encyclopedia that considers us all to be experts. A few of my favorite revelations : BBC censors excerpt from BBC-commissioned report criticizing the BBC's tendency to self-censor. There may be some irony here. Nortel - Accounting scandal, what accounting scandal This sweeping rewrite of Nortel's …

2007-08-17 21:59 McDonald's branding and children's taste
If you don't think McDonald's branding works - at least with young children - read on. Researchers at Stanford studied 63 children aged from 3.5 to 5.4 years to see if these kids would prefer foods that came in McDonald's packaging. The children were presented with identical McDonald's foods in either a plain wrapper or in a wrapper with the McDonald's logo, then asked which one tasted better. The foods were (1) one-quarter of a McDonald's hamburger, one partially wrapped in a white McDonald's w …

2007-08-17 21:28 Understanding Gumballs: From Trunk To Maltoni
If there is one secret to be learned after conducting hundreds and thousands of interviews, ranging from an emotionally exhausted mother staying at a Ronald McDonald House to billionaire Sheldon Adelson, it is that the success of any interview hinges on effective communication. And, if there is any prerequisite to ensure effective communication, it is to see the interviewee as a person, regardless of any perceived labels status, position, gender, whatever. The concept is simple. The execution is …

2007-08-16 18:49 ELVIS PRESLEY IS STILL DEAD
Surprisingly, not a scene from a special episode of ACCORDING TO JIM. It's the thirtieth anniversary of the passing of the King, and I remember that day in 1977 like it was yesterday. I had just barely turned twelve and was quite immersed in the history and music of rock 'n' roll, and although I had listened to a lot of Elvis Presley I just didn't get what the big deal was. I'd seen the footage of his appearances on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW, suffered through a few of his (mostly) wretched flicks tha …

2007-08-14 21:57 Can Millions of Online Fans Write One Def Jam Song
In what has to be a branding collaboration first, Yahoo is teaming up with McDonalds and record label Def Jam to encourage music fans to contribute lyrics for a future song by recording artist Ne-Yo. Yahoo Music is hosting an eight week contest on a co-branded site with McDonald's at music.yahoo.com/lyricmakers, where fans can vote on one of four song themes: love, peace, dreams and party. After that, they'll be able to submit lines of lyrics to be voted on, with the winning lyrics to be incorpo …

Today I leave with my grandson to go to the Children's Hospital for another bone aspiration. We're all packed just in case we might have to stay for awhile. Hopefully they will find that he has just a liver malfunction that can be treated with meds. If not, we're ready for anything. This time I'm bringing a laptop my son was kind enough to lend me and there is internet on the Oncology floor, so I'll be able to keep up with my blogging and be able to visit my favorite bloggers.
