2007-10-12 04:58 Adding RSS posts to ThinqLinq using System.ServiceModel.Syndication.SyndicationFeed
When I originally started the ThinqLinq project I began by loading the RSS feed from my DevAuthority blog, and iterating over the results adding them to the PostItems table in the data context. With LINQ this is relatively easy. Loading the XML from the feed is done with a single line: Dim Feed As System.Xml.Linq.XDocument = XDocument.Load( "http://devauthority.com/blogs/jwooley/rss.aspx" ) The xml document consists some basic informational elements which are not terribly important in this insta …

2007-10-05 18:24 Shannon Whitley: Social Media Architect
My job has always involved working with multiple applications and connecting them together. That's what you do in IT: create a software ecosystem with custom software and parts from various vendors. I think that's why I'm so comfortable working in the Web 2.0 World of mashable-this and widget-that. It's not unlike what I've been doing my entire career. Lately, every project that I've worked on has required me to become familiar, very quickly, with an array of different services. I have to u …

2007-08-22 06:21 Work In Progress : Big Screen Headlines 2
Some of you may have noticed that Big Screen Headlines v1 trial has expired on the mobilewares site (and hasn't been updated) - and the reason for this has been the imminent release of new update - Big Screen Headline v2. If you haven't seen Big Screen Headlines before - it's a RSS Browser for Vista Media Center - and was released back in Oct last year (before Vista was RTM'd). For the v2 release - this update started off as a minor UI facelift - and in the course of things - the entire MC …

2007-08-21 13:30 Tuesday Think Tank: All About RSS
This guide isn't intended for just the beginner blogger, or for the advanced blogger. It's intended to grasp some of the issues surrounding one of the most used, yet somewhat misunderstood aspects of a blog - your RSS feed. What is RSS RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication". It, along with a type of syndication known as Atom, are the most common forms of distribution of content that is updated on a regular basis - such as a blog or news site. Does my site have RSS If you have a blog, you sho …

2007-08-21 01:34 Readers Return
Being a fairly new blogger I have troubles keeping regular readers coming back, but I have found the solution. Zookoda is an email marketing tool for blogs using an email newsletter. The newsletter is completely customizable from the times and days the letter is sent, to the style and persona you want to portray. Zookoda provides you with a subscriber tool that is easily added to your blogs HTML and keeps track of all your fans. When you sign up you are also provided with reports so that you can …

2007-08-20 03:43 Pub/Sub vs. Atom & AtomPub
I came across an interesting article by Sean McGrath entitled I'll push and you pull. The mashup approach to application integration. I posted about Push vs. Pull in the spring. I'm a sucker for Lean thinking so the title of this article got my attention. Sean says: Now here is the kicker. The web - with all its concomitant bits'n'bobs from XML to RSS/Atom to AJAX - is an extremely good platform for pull-centric design. On the Web, if you try to pull some piece of information and something goes …

2007-08-16 06:08 Facebook s data feeds a data leak
[ Update, 8/16/07, 11:50 a.m.: Facebook's Chief Privacy Officer Chris Kelly has responded that Facebook addresses these issues, but I think there's more they should do on the disclosure front, and hope there's more they can do on the technological one. ] Please correct me if I'm wrong about this; I want to be wrong about this. Or I want to learn that Facebook has already considered and dealt with the issue and it's just not readily apparent to me. But I'm thinking that Facebook's feeds for Statu …

2007-08-12 16:07 One-click mashup: gmap + geonames bookmarklet
Doing some research for url_pipe for DemoCampMontreal4, I went around looking for the state-of-the-art in feed technology. Some of this stuff was too cool not to turn into a bookmarklet. Create a bookmark (e.g. "Map this!"), with the following for location: javascript:links = document.getElementsByTagName('link');for(var i=0; i < links.length; i++) {if (links[i].rel == 'alternate') {this.location = 'http://maps.google.com/mapsf=q&hl=en&q=' + 'http://ws.geonames.org/rssToGeoRSSfeedUrl=' + encodeU …

2007-08-11 16:27 Grazing the Web with Grazr
Thanks to Kristin Hokanson for introducing me to Grazr. I just got around to experimenting with it today and I'm really impressed with its functionality and ease of use. Here is some quick background on this useful feed aggregator. What is Grazr Grazr is a free publishing tool for feeds. It lets you quickly and easily display RSS, RDF, Atom, and OPML files on any Web page so they can be viewed by any visitor to the site. Grazr is written in Javascript, so no software download or installation is …

2007-08-09 13:46 6 Google APIs - the Lesser Known
Adam Ostrow at Mashable has written up a non-technical introduction to Google's most popular APIs and links to some applications built using these. His post prompted me to revisit Google's own Google APIs page this morning which lists some 36 services available to programmers. Although they are not all strictly APIs (some just provide RSS / Atom outputs) I thought I'd call out some of the lesser known Google APIs, six in all: 1. YouTube API The YouTube video repository and user community are acc …
