2007-10-20 01:25  In the navy: den amerikanska marinens nya strategiska doktrin förändrar världen.
Mupparna sjunger.

2007-10-16 18:34  Victory is in sight in Iraq
The Democrats and their liberal cohorts are between a rock and a hard place.  Of course, you'll never hear THEM admit that, but there they sit nonetheless.  Let me explain. Monday last, some extraordinary was reported on the evening news.  At least, it was reported on Fox News.  I can't say if it was given any time at all on the broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, etc.  Brit Hume reported that commanders in Iraq are saying that US forces and our Iraqi allies have devastated al Queda, that we have …

2007-10-15 13:00  Civil Liberties: Detention without Trial
Hauled before a military tribunal at the American naval base in Guantánamo Bay, the detainee, picked up in Afghanistan, asked why he was being held. For associating with a member of al-Qaeda, he was told. Give me his name, the detainee demanded. The tribunal's president said he didn't know it. Nor did any of the tribunal's other members. œHow can I respond to this the detainee cried before being taken back to his cell to continue his detention, perhaps for the rest of his life. This Kafkaesque …

2007-10-12 21:26  25,000 US detainees in Iraq
The mass attention to the abuse of those in detention began with the April 2004 Abu Ghraib revelations. Yet both human rights activists and we psychologists have focussed most upon abuses that occurred at Guantanamo, and more recently, at the CIA "black sites." So we need a reminder that there are huge numbers of detainees held in Iraq, in support of an illegal and brutal occupation, and more held in Afghanistan. AFP provides such a reminder with an article telling us that US forces are holding …

2007-10-12 14:59  So did he quit or what
The entire nation is tumid with anticipation over the forthcoming Fox News rockumentary Dick Cheney: No Retreat. The "We Report, You Decide" people gave us a little taste today, reporting that Cheney disagreed with Bush's decision to dismiss former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. But wait. Last year the Murdochian Media Cartel told us that Rummy was " resigning ." I'm confused. Please tell me what to believe, Fr. Rupert.

2007-10-10 20:03  Unions We don't need no stinkin' unions
In bold defiance of the conventionally understood workings of the local space-time continuum, Barack Obama's campaign manager said Wednesday that Obama can win Nevada's Democratic presidential caucus without the the endorsement of the Culinary union. During a conference call with reporters to announce additions to the campaign's field operations in the state, Obama national campaign manager David Plouffe said that obviously the campaign would like to have endorsements from the 60,000 strong Culi …

2007-10-09 18:28  Mea Culpa, mea minima culpa
It is becoming a genre, this tearful backtracking from aggressive imperialism. Hitchens expressing his solipsistic distress about what happened to his democratic revolution, blaming bin Ladenist and Ba'athist 'riff raff' for its failure. Ignatieff taking on the mantle of the messiah, and blaming Iraqis for being incapable of self-government. Peter Beinart blaming Makiya for his military adventurism, and ditching his attempted resuscitation of Cold War liberalism. The neocons blaming Rumsfeld's l …

2007-10-09 02:30  Lowe Extended
One of the commenters in the previous post pointed out John MacKinnon's story (you're welcome for the link John) on Kevin Lowe's four year extension (as a politically oblivious Jason Portuondo put it on Sportsnet "Lowe has a better shot at four more years than George W. Bush). There are a couple of good quotes that warrant pulling out of the story and I've yet to comment on the renewal, so I thought I'd dip into it. First from Cal Nichols: "It's a greasy pole these days," Nichols said about the …

Roger Cohen : œNeocon is an insult used to obliterate the existence of this liberal position, says Paul Berman, a writer often so insulted. Liberal interventionists, if you recall, were people like myself for whom the sight in the 1990s of hundreds of thousands of European Muslims processed through Serbian concentration camps, or killed in them, left little doubt of the merits, indeed the necessity, of U.S. military action in the name of the human dignity that only open societies afford. Everyone who has taken a fair look at the evidence has concluded that -- at the least -- the U.S. military was intentionally stood down on 9/11. There are numerous lines of evidence that certain high-level people within the U.S. military participated in the intentional stand down. But what of the many rank and file employees of the various defense departments who were good men and women devoted to protecting their country Why didn't they stop the 9/11 attacks Part of the answer is that they were …

A Milwaukee Journal editorial recently opined that "A Republican Congress abandoned its principles and left the country ill-prepared to meet long-term obligations." "Fiscal discipline is needed" it concluded. The piece criticised the $190 billion 2002 Farm Bill, 70% of which went to the richest 10% of farmers. It also targeted the new Medicare prescription drug benefit. Both could charitably be described as socialism for the rich-U.S. agribusiness, insurance and pharmaceuticals companies! While …

2007-09-29 11:15  Liberals and Conservatives in the News
By Stanford Matthews Blog @ MoreWhat.com Positive news is always welcome. It has been in short supply lately. Some attribute the predominance of negative news to a liberal leaning MSM. But there are plenty of left leaning sources who claim the press is right wing while the right leaning sources claim it's left wing. Which means the audience must rely on their own judgment in checking news. A group of headlines viewed today are encouraging. An additional report on how Sarkozy is reinventing Frenc …

Donald Rumsfeld was recently invited to become a "Visiting Fellow" at Stanford's right-wing think tank, The Hoover Institution .  Rummy will be spending a year on campus with his fellow conservatives, George Schultz and Newt Gingrich.  On Sept. 7, the Hoover Institution announced that Rumsfeld will serve on a task force  focused upon issues pertaining to "ideology and terror."  Silly me, I thought he was already an expert on "ideology and terror" and didn't realize that he needed to think about …
