2007-11-06 12:50  Blue Plate Special
It was another one of those Uni Watch red-alert moments last night, as about a dozen readers e-mailed me all at once and another half-dozen or so posted all at once in the comments section. The cause Jason Strudwick of the Rangers got in a fight and his nameplate came loose during the fisticuffs, revealing some nasty-looking adhesive residue on the underside. All of which is very entertaining. But here's my question: Since when have the Rangers been using nameplates I always thought they used di …

2007-08-21 06:26  Wolves Updates 8/21
Steve at Taking It To The Rack hosts Crashing the Party, Carnival of the NBA #48. From CelticsBlog, a note from ESPN The Magazine: Trading Kevin Garnett and his monster contract should have at least earned some financial freedom for the Wolves. But no. Al Jefferson and Ryan Gomes, the two key pieces in the swap, will be restricted free agents next summer and VP Kevin McHale had better keep them if he hopes to salvage any face. That gives both players huge leverage. "It's a killer," says a rival …

2007-08-18 14:51  Adios Comfort Zone
Something happened to me earlier this week that I ll not likely soon forget. I ended up in the emergency room and since then I ve stayed in my apartment: warm, soothing, welcoming apartment, it has felt like a haven and a prison for me this week. I ve been operating at half-speed (talking, walking, thinking), keeping me out of work and on the couch and in bed for the week. Today I started feeling a little more normal and went out to see if the subway still freaked me out (it did). On my way back …

2007-08-17 11:33  Danny's Vision and Vindication
Danny has taken his share of abuse for the Celtics fortunes over the past 3 years. When he came to the job he said that he had a 5 year plan to rebuild the Celtics and get them back to contention. His plan was to gather "chips" and then trade them for established stars. Many fans were disillusioned with the "youth movement" and felt that the Celtics were years away from contending, if ever. But what most of us forgot was Danny's initial vision of gathering trading chips. Some of his moves were l …

2007-08-16 15:14  Leon Powe
Continuing a look at the many Celtic (not so) bigs, I move to Leon Powe. In a draft night trade with Denver, Danny was able to pick him up late in the second round. After playing for California and leading his conference in both scoring and rebounding, he dropped in the draft due to injury/health concerns. He had proven to be a very good player when healthy. But frankly, he was considered potentially damaged goods. He was a risk. In a replay of the year before, when Danny found a 2nd round slide …

2007-08-12 16:29  Feeling Minnesota
Minnesota has made the move to dump Kevin Garnett so it's time to bite the rest of the bullets in the clip and deal the remaining veterans on the team.  Some of the guys are on short contracts and could leave for nothing while other players are overpaid and/or aren't the kind of players you want around. 1. Deal Mark Blount, Marko Jaric, and Gerald Green for Jerome James, Malik Rose, and two unprotected first round picks. Gerald Green might have potential but he's a terrible fit for shooting guar …

2007-08-12 12:37  The Coaching Question Part 2
Yesterday, I talked about the coaching question from the viewpoint of Doc's critics and his negatives. But in fairness, there is another side of the argument and Doc does have his supporters. As I was reading through message boards and blog posts, it seems that Celtics fans and writers are just about equally divided as to Doc's capabilities, with a slight edge going to those against Doc. In the Globe, Doc had this to day about his situation compared to that of Greg Popovich. Rivers has endured a …

2007-08-12 07:40  Wolves Updates 8/12
David Aldridge/Philadelphia Inquirer ranks every team based on offseason moves and places the Wolves last on the list. It's not that the Wolves traded Garnett; it was time. But how did they not get the guy they really wanted - Rajon Rondo - from Boston Rajon Rondo was a deal-breaker for one of the league's top five players It's another example of how brain-dead this franchise has been for a decade. SI.com lists Al Jefferson at #3 on its list of players on the verge of stardom. The centerpiece of …

2007-08-11 01:20  Too many MCs not enough Mics
I know that Baseball is in full swing and we are now just getting to the entertaining part of NFL training camp but I just can't get over the Timberwolves. I'm probably the last person that should be trying to figure out the roster for next year, but this team has way too many players that play the same position (2 &3) and too many players in general. I'm going to try to go through the roster, make some hypothetical trades, balance veterans and newbies and get this team down to the 12 active pla …

Penny Hardaway signed to the Miami Heat this past Thursday. The 36 year old hasn t played since 2005-2006 (he only played four games because of arthritic knees), his one year deal is limited to an apprehensive veteran s minimum of $1.2 million for one year and isn t fully guaranteed. Alongside the opinions of NBA All-Star Carlos Boozer, former NBA player Tim Hardaway claims that Penny s still got it: œHe still plays good defense, runs the floor well, shoots the same, knows how to cut and run. …

2007-08-08 06:14  On Tuesday's press conference
Click here for a transcript of yesterday's press conference. Mike Trudell/Timberwolves site has a follow-up with Kevin McHale. From Brandt Williams/MPR: Timberwolves Vice President Kevin McHale says it was a hard decision to trade Garnett, but he says it was apparent that the team and Garnett were going in different directions. "He really wanted to play -- at this stage in his career -- with older guys that had a chance to win a championship. So if we were going young I'm not sure our paths were …

2007-08-08 03:40  From Nieman Marcus to KMart. Are we done
Now that the question has been answered whether Wyc and partners will go into luxury tax territory to create a contending team, the only other question is how far 'in' will they go After obtaining two of the league's elite players Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, it seems that Wyc has put away the charge card with the high interest rate and told Danny to use the change purse from here on out.  Attention Kmart Shoppers, Danny Ainge has entered the building. And it seems he has found two good values t …

2007-08-07 22:39  Wild eighth frame carries Tigers to win
Ryan Raburn slid just in front of a throw home for the go-ahead run in a wild eighth frame that featured seven runs, including Jonny Gomes' game-tying grand slam in the top of the inning, as Detroit downed Tampa Bay, 9-6, at Comerica Park. What looked like a Detroit romp entering the top of the eighth quickly turned into a wild American League slugfest during a lengthy eighth inning. With just a runner on first and two outs, Delmon Young and Brendan Harris both singled before Gomes lined a pitch …

It was Kevin McHale doing most of the talking early on today when the Timberwolves formally introduced the five former Celtics - Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair and Theo Ratliff - acquired in the Kevin Garnett megadeal last week. 2007-08-07 18:23  Oh My God......
Monday night was the annual semi -final double header of the Greater Hartford Pro-Am basketball league. In a night that has traditionally presented the most intense summer basketball in New England, Monday night s offerings were uniquely mundane. The weekend saw some major upsets in the quarterfinals to teams led by the great Ryan Gomes, former UConn talents Edmund Saunders and Talik Brown, and former COC conference stalwart Izzy Charo. The first semi final game pitted number one seed All Axxess …

2007-08-07 18:15  Kevin Garnett the Celtic
This one is going to be a doozy, but here goes. The Boston Celtics have made one of the (apparently) most glorious trades in Celtic history after making their second most glorious trade in history (not entirely true here, but bare with me). Well, I give it to them that this was a good trade, they got one of the league s top 5 players and one of the league s top 20 players in one summer and manage to keep their one namesake superstar. But there is a lot to address. Again. Trade #1: Seattle receiv …

2007-08-06 02:52  Moveable Feast
Ladie and Gentlemen - Introducing the Minnesota Celtics. I think it's a record. When 5 players ( Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Gerald Green, Sebastian Telfair and Theo Ratliff ) move to a team that already had 2 of its previous players ( Ricky Davis, Mark Blount)   from a few years earlier, you have to expect the 'Minnesota Celtics' moniker to be bandied about. Much of it is in fun, but darn, these guys were part of Celtics Dreams for many of us. It is a veritable buffet of players. And now Minnesot …

2007-08-05 23:24  Where Do We Go From Here
Post KG: Where do the T-Wolves go from here The unthinkable happened. The Minnesota Timberwolves traded their heart and soul, Kevin Garnett. I knew it could happen, I just didn't think this time would finally come. After 12 wonderful years, Garnett is gone. Our KG is now the Boston Celtic's KG. What do we do now For one, I don't think we can dwell on the past and allow this trade to tear the fabric of us Wolves fans apart. We need to rally around and support our young squad.
