2007-09-17 04:05 Atropa's Cottage
I've had a small stash of Atropa's Cottage scents hanging around waiting to be tested for something like 18 months now (I've got DSH that old and more...). I've just worked through them the last couple of days, and it's been irksome that I can't find the original descriptions anywhere. The above link is quite dead, the domain is in place-holder mode, and the LJ comm is long-since pushing up daisies. So I've been poking around at The Wayback Machine, and culling reviews of LEs from BPAL.org. I'm …

The Crusader army led by Richard Coeur de Lion, King of England, held off a succession of onslaughts by Saladin's army at Arsuf, near Jaffa. Although Richard's victory allowed him to take Jaffa and Ascalon that winter, he was unable...

2007-08-28 16:40 My Favorite Forest Movie (Besides Fast Times At Ridgemont High)
Okay, so admittedly I am not the biggest Forest Whitaker fan. Yes, I know people think he's a great actor, yes I know he's survived the Hollywood game for decades, and yes, I know he was supposed to be the end-all in "The Last King Of Scotland". I wish him well, but I am still unmoved. I think it's his face; it's difficult for me to concentrate while looking at it. Anyway, one reader Saladin (who has a blog of very interesting perspectives on things), voted for "Ghost Dog-The Way Of The Samurai" …

2007-08-27 08:16 Denmark: Hizb ut-Tahrir's annual conference
Hizb ut-Tahrir in Denmark gathered Sunday for the movement's six-hour annual conference. The conference caused calls from politicians to ban the movement, mainly from the Danish Social Liberal Party (Radikale) and the Danish People's Party. Fadi Addullatif, the movement's spokesperson, said in response that Denmark is becoming a dictatorship, just like those Denmark criticizes in the Middle East.He said such developments blur the difference between the dictatorships and the European governmen …

2007-08-27 07:04 Textbooks, Textbooks and More Textbooks
The Dallas Morning News had a pair of articles on Sunday about the textbook dilemma that I've addressed previously here and here .Both articles were written by professors who write textbooks. Michael Granof is an accounting professor and also the chair of the University Co-op Bookstore at the University of Texas at Austin. Kenneth S. Saladin is a professor of biology at Georgia College & State University. Dr. Granof argues that a well-organized used book market is what keeps prices of new textbo …

2007-08-17 12:14 Hamas TV rapped for animal abuse
" A US-based animal rights group says it will protest to a Hamas-run TV channel over a programme, showing animals being abused at a zoo in the Gaza Strip. "It's a shame that the biggest problem we see with Palestinian death-cult TV is the way they treat animals. (Yeah, I know, Jooz rank lower than animals.) "Nahoul, a giant bee: My friends, Al-Aqsa awaits you. My dears, Al-Aqsa is very sad. My friends, Al-Aqsa is being held prisoner and is besieged by the criminal murderers of children. We must …

Thanks for stopping by for One Shot World Tour: Best Read with Vegemite! The Australian author featured here at Tea Cozy is Catherine Jinks ; and, in particular, her books about Pagan Kidrouk, 16. Why Because I think these books are brilliant. So, let's start at the beginning. Pagan's Crusade The Plot: Pagan lives in Jerusalem in the 12th century; he's an odd mix. A penniless orphan who can read and write; a boy raised in a monastery who for the last few years has lived a rough and dangerous lif …

We'll call this one The White Rabbit, or, Why I Am Not A Wizard. **Robin Hood - This gets first mention because it was the single most important and formative story for me, especially between the ages of...let's say six and ten...though I've never really gotten over it as such. I am not sure exactly what about the legend captured me so completely, but I was obsessed. I collected different versions of it - Antonia Fraser's was my favourite, and the version by which I critically assessed all of th …

2007-07-30 22:45 Amartya Sen on the Clash of Civilizations
"People see themselves and have reason to see themselves in many different ways. For example, a Bangladeshi Muslim is not only a Muslim but also a Bengali and a Bangladeshi, typically quite proud of the Bengali language, literature, and music, not to mention the other identities he or she may have connected with class, gender, occupation, politics, aesthetic taste, and so on. Bangladesh's separation from Pakistan was not based on religion at all, since a Muslim identity was shared by the bulk of …

Justinian's Flea: Plague, Empire, and the Birth of Europe In the middle of the sixth century, the world's smallest organism collided with the world's mightiest empire. Twenty-five million corpses later, the Roman Empire, under her last great emperor, Justinian, was decimated. Before Yersinia pestis, the bacterium that carries bubonic plague, was through, both the Rome and Persian empires were easy pickings for the armies of Muhammad on their conquering march out of Arabia. In its wake, the plagu …

2007-07-25 23:12 Dating the schism
I just happened across this very helpful tidbit written by our friend, Professor William J. Tighe, for the dearly lamented Pontifications. The context is a response to a passage from Louis Bouyer's The Church of God (1982). It is true that the date of 1054 is wholly symbolic (however important a symbol it later became) and without concrete importance in the process. Rome and Constantinople, it appears, had been in technical schism from one another since 1009, when Pope Sergius IV (1009-1012) …

2007-07-20 17:13 How Empires End
July 20, 2007 by Patrick J. Buchanan Responding to the call of Pope Urban II at Claremont in 1095, the Christian knights of the First Crusade set out for the Holy Land. In 1099, Jerusalem was captured. As their port in Palestine, the Crusaders settled on Acre on the Mediterranean. There they built the great castle that was overrun by Saladin in 1187, but retaken by Richard the Lion-Hearted in 1191. Acre became the capital of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and the stronghold of the Crusader state, whic …

2007-07-18 19:53 Introducing Masyaf, assassin's fortress of Syria
Tired of waiting for Assassin's Creed Perhaps a story of a real-life assassin's nest in Syria, which was erected during the era of the Crusades, will get you going. Saladin, a great general who lived during the 12th century, was also the Sultan of Egypt and Syria during his time. He was the target of two known assassination attempts during one of his campaigns. The last one was almost successful, even managing to draw blood. It is believed that this was the initial cause of why he decided to bes …

Secrets of Assassins' fort unearthed in Syria By Tom Perry 13 July 2007 Reuters News Nestled at the foot of Syria's coastal mountains, an ancient citadel has been put on the tourist map by restoration and excavation that revealed mysteries of the medieval Assassins sect, once based here. Saladin, the great Muslim leader, laid siege to Masyaf castle in the 12th century. But he thought twice before launching an assault on the Assassins, who had a reputation for mounting daring operations to slay t …

2007-07-15 05:33 Israel Endures, and so does a Paladin...
I had started this piece as a reply to a discussion on Snooper's site. However, given my condition that spree refers to as "diarrhea of the mouth," I found it to be too long to put there, and decided to put it here instead. Let me preface this piece by stating, for the record, that I am a Zionist. I have been a Zionist long before I truly knew what the term meant, or even that there was a term for it. As a child reared in a church upbringing, I can remember many of the stories and lessons of Sun …

2007-07-15 04:39 Taos on Saturday
Today is Bastille Day and Pow wow day in Taos. I started my laundry at 6am, narrowly beating out Saladin. Dorothy and I worked on our synopses assignments and finished just in time for lunch. After lunch we walked to the local shop, where I got a water bottle for my hike tomorrow. We had to hurry home before the afternoon storm began. We were back in time for G.R.R. Martin's talk, and then everyone posed for our class picture. Afterwards, it was dinner at the Apple Tree Restaurant in Taos. I rod …

Still doing my homework for the Francine / Sapphire comparison. I even found a couple of Amos 'n' Andy episodes to listen to, gods help me. In the meantime, another challenge! At some point I'm going to turn my attention to the original Doctor Who. Help me compile a list of as many non-White characters from the old show as we can think of (it won't prove anything, but will give us some examples to work with). 2007-07-11 23:32 To (possibly) reiterate...
I know I've probably said this before, but could Richard Lionheart and Saladin just *fuck* already Just think of the problems that could have been solved if Saladin had just captured him and non-conned him into compliance He would make a very good pet, once properly taught, just spirited enough to keep a man always wanting more. Of course, he's still issues with his brother and Phillip and stuff...so that would be a serious relationship blocker. But other than that, can't you just see him, chain …

2007-07-10 17:32 Book-banning mom can t even convince own son
Book-banning mom can't even convince own son Eighty books in high school library stacks are corrupting students with tales of abortion, homosexuality and atheism. That's according to a West Palm Beach mother who has appealed to the school board to remove the books from the shelves of Dreyfoos and Royal Palm Beach high schools. Laura Lopez has been fighting since September to ban these books that she says "promote sin and lies." This fundie nutjob went to the library computer and typed in "aborti …

2007-07-08 08:11 The Crusade
A superb script by David Whitaker combined with a stellar cast, Douglas Camfield's polished direction, Barry Newbery's excellent sets and Dudley Simpson's beautiful incidental score makes "The Crusade" one of Doctor Who's finest productions ever. Mesmerizing, sophisticated and adult in all aspects, majestic, poetic and Shakespearean in its dialog. This is exactly what a good, solid Doctor Who story should be. It offers a fascinating insight into Arabic culture without managing to be racist or de …

2007-07-05 18:30 Fresh shots from Anime Expo '07
Independence Day aside, July 4 marks the canonization of Saint Ulrich of Augsburg, Saladin defeated Guy of Lusignan, the abolition of slavery in the state of New York, and the day Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was published. But for otakus, hardcore and casual gamers, it could only mean one thing - it's time for Anime Expo. People who were able to join Anime Expo '07 definitely had a blast, but we can get our share of fun by looking at these cosplay snapshots from Siliconera. On the left …

Not since I read Chapter 1 of Ray Manzarek 's Light My Fire, My Life With the Doors have I had such a sense of "WHOA!!! HEY!!!" upon reading a biography about a rock star. See, Chapter 1 of Manzarek's book - turns out he was born in 1939. Same year as my parents. Cool! Read a little further, he grew up in Chicago! So did my Dad! On the south side! So did my dad!
