Blogs about Science Olympiad
2007-09-06 08:43 Congratulations JM!
My nephew JM and his friend David ( the two handsome boys in the middle, in their school uniform ) won second place is a qualifying round for the National Science Olympiad. He won it on his birthday! I am very happy to hear about this news. I love Science and I was a Science Scholar in High School. This news brought back some good memories :) Here's the excerpt from my borther's e-mail: I just want to let you know that JM and his classmates qualified for the national finals of the Science Olympi …

2007-09-06 03:55 Thankful Thursday - Errands And More
1. Thankful that I am able to do a lot of overdue errands and appointments yesterday and today: dentist ( yes, again ); thyroid prescription refill ( I know, it took me this long ), dropped off refinancing docs to Joe, etc., etc. There's a lot more to be done but it's slowly getting done ( and yes, I had to take a couple hours off from work to be able to do many of these personal errands ). 2. Thankful for a friend who started blogging. May she find the catharsis, joy and peace in doing so. 3. T …

2007-08-14 22:39 Informatics Olympiads (III): Understanding Results
Assuming I convinced you that you should pay attention to Informatics Olympiads, here is your practical guide to how to interpret results from the various olympiads out there... In the sports Olympiad, there are dozens of competitions (gymnastics, lifting, running etc etc), and 3 medals per competition. In science olympiads, there is one competition with more medals. Specifically: the top 1/12 of the competitors get gold the next 2/12 silver the next 3/12 bronze the bottom 6/12 gets nothing (and …

2007-08-14 21:23 Informatics Olympiads (I): The Contest
Ok, so many of you have heard about Informatics Olympiads from me or other people. But what exactly are these things This is your quick survival guide. At a glance. The IOI (International Olympiad in Informatics) is the Computer Science equivalent of the IMO (International Math Olympiad). Each country sends 4 high-school students, who spend 5 hours on 2 consecutive days solving problems (3 problems are assigned each day). This is an individual contest (no team rankings, no collaboration). The pr …

2007-08-14 18:41 Cutting through the Bullshit
Nobody likes to be wrong, but it happens. I want to try to explain why I was wrong before I rescind my previous post. One of the reasons why I've kept what could be regarded as an absurdly open mind on the subject of global warming is that it's never been sufficiently explained to me. All the people prominent in the media today talking assume man-made global warming without really presenting evidence of the theory. It's not like evolution, which is still struggling to gain widespread acceptance …

2007-07-31 06:12 Bijective Combinatorics
I was remarking previously that this blog is meant to be somewhat similar to Terry Tao's blog, but without the associated Fields medal. Maybe a more important difference however, is that while Terry Tao is (still) doing old Math, it seems I am working on the new Math. And what better plot twist could reinforce our community's claim, than to have algorithms become not only the language of science, but the language of Math itself. This post is about an area of Mathematics where this may end up hap …

2007-07-27 03:55 Explosion @ Rocket Test Site
Explosion at a rocket test site kills two, injures four. I feel awful about this; at science olympiad nationals, the opening ceremony included a speech by the chief engineer. Since then I've grown rather attached to SpaceOne and associated endeavors, and this is going to make investors hesitate a bit I'm sure. (I think they also had a perfect safety record before this, too... another pity.)

Meme blatantly stolen from littletort 1) Take your LJ username and replace each letter with the corresponding number (A=1, B=2, etc...). If your name contains numbers, you'll need to convert them to letters first before you can convert to numbers 2) Add all of the numbers together to create a kind of super number. 3) Make a note of the first digit of this number, then add the digits of the number together. 4) Find the post of this number in your LJ. If you don't have that many posts, add the dig …

2007-07-05 01:46 Maria Agatha "Agi" Wins Spelling Bee with a Perfect Score!
Congratulations Maria Agatha "Agi" for placing 3rd in her school's Science Olympiad! AND for winning the Spelling Bee competition with a perfect score! (It's the first time that a student won the school's competition with such flair!) My eldest daughter My Closeness - My Soulmate was given the honor of representing her class in two of the three contests yesterday, which were held one after the other. Yeah, it's obvious - I am a proud dad! But prouder still that My Closeness is growing up with he …

So, finally, I am now in on this blogging phenomenon of memes. The Exterminator of No More Hornets wants me to do the "Eight Random Facts" meme, and I am happy to oblige him. But, first, the rules: ~ Players have to post these rules before they give you the facts. ~ Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves. ~ People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules. {Isn't that last bit redundant} ~ At the end of your blog, you need to …

Madelinex2 added an entry about go to Science Olympiad national competition : National competition is the greatest whirlwind of an experience! So many entertaining people and activities plus the kind of stress that I assume most Olympians live for. Bloomington, Indiana. That one took the cake for me. But they're all good.

2007-06-14 04:49 A Fine Line (a oneshot, or part 1/)
My dreams are weird. 5 ½ hours writing/editing, an hour typing it up, my physics labs mocking me in the window behind this one. =.= Actually now, it's physics labs AND social studies. Original fiction, rated T. This story is not particularly happy. Things I'm most worried about: Characterisation/ distinctive voices, coherency of plot/scenes, organisation of plot/scenes. He had been my enemy ever since I first met his blue-grey eyes from across the physics classroom. In the beginning, it was mere …

2007-05-18 06:05 Annual Science Olympiad National Tournament
At Wichita State U in Kansas this weekend, "One hundred-twenty teams from 45 states will compete in more than 40 events that make science fun, yet educational. During the tournament, students will analyze crime scene evidence, design and build a Rube Goldberg-like device that uses a series of energy transfers to accomplish a task, build a device that can launch a projectile by only using a falling counterweight, and even design musical instruments."

2007-03-30 14:50 Math Circles Inspire Students
By Julie J. Rehmeyer Evan O'Dorney leaps from his seat and snatches the chalk from his teacher's hand. "I think it goes like this," the eighth-grader exclaims. He has come up with a formula for the number of ways to divide a set of objects into three subsets, and he explains it to the group. "What do you think" the teacher asks, turning to the group of teenagers. "Are you persuaded" "I am!" one student calls out. Others begin nodding their heads in agreement. Zvezdelina Stankova presents a model …

2007-01-29 03:50 anyway the wind blows
Haven't spammed your friends page updated in a while, sorry! :X I've been busy with doing actual schoolwork and preparing for the academic decathlon (which takes place this week!). Okay, so the only reason I'm typing this right now instead of studying like a good student is that I'm shaking from the caffeine rush of the frappuccino I'm drinking and I might as well do something with all this untapped energy. Well, now that Fruits Basket ended months ago - it's sort of strange not religiously refr …
