2007-10-16 12:44  The ˜Diversity of Ideas Lie at UC Davis
In the strange logic of UC Davis, Lawrence Summers' views are "appalling" and worthy of censorship, while Norman Finkelstein and Ward Churchill represent "diversity." One thing that Columbia University s recent invitation to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmajinidad made clear was that questionable intellect and moral imbecility will not immediately disqualify someone from being an honored speaker on the most prestigious American campuses. What might get you disinvited, however - as it did for forme …

2007-10-14 13:39  Fumble! (with notes on the coherence of the TV text and the new season)
I agree with Heather Havrilesky and lots of other people that Friday Night Lights is in trouble. It might have been better for the show to have ended last season. Then we would have had our memories and our State Championship and our righteous anger at the greedy capitalist philistines of NBC. The show would have lived on as a glorious single season and an eternal what-if, a worthy successor in the teen TV before-their-time pantheon to My So-Called Life and Freak and Geeks. But now we may have t …

I'd been meaning to post a link to this piece in 5th October's Guardian, as it summed up a lot of my feelings on the matter. While not supporting a generalised boycott of Israeli academia, I have some misgivings about such a boycott's having been declared unlawful, especially as no reasons have been given in support of such an opinion. The threats cited by Dr Gopal to academic freedom in the United States are well-known: Organisations such as Campus Watch monitor what academics write and teach, …

2007-10-08 02:48  Continuing the talk about education (US, Taiwanese, and France)
NOTE : We're leaving for vacation tomorrow morning for a couple of days, so I've got to stop writing. I'll probably clean this up and add some more to it in a couple of days. I was caught the other day by one of Mark's posts at Doubting to Shuo that referenced a 20/20 report called "Stupid in America." I had linked to the same video on the blog I kept while I was living in Paris. At the time, I was readying The World is Flat for the first time, and I was floored by just how bad we were doing in …

2007-10-08 02:03  Expert advice
There's nothing like a combat situation to sharpen ethical dilemmas to their most extreme point. For instance: the US military's use of anthropologists in the course of their operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. As the New York Times reports, an experimental Pentagon program is embedding "anthropologists and other social scientists" with combat units in the field, and utilizing their professional expertise to alter both strategic and tactical courses of action. The goal here, at least on the part …

2007-10-01 13:18  Chavez cannot get good help: the Centro Internacional Miranda
One of the dramas of regimes that range between autocratic to totalitarian is that the big leaders have a hard time in getting good help. I mean, they can easily attract through power, money, or both, people capable of doing all the nasty things required for the beloved Supremo to remain in office. But that is all. Professional people, experienced people, people aware of their own value, have a hard time putting up with the tantrums and bad manners of the leaders of such regimes and prefer to ex …

Tomorrow evening I will be picking up Dr. Kenton Sparks at the airport. He is the speaker for Taylor University College's "Faith & Culture Conference" which runs Thursday and Friday of this week. The title of this year's conference is " God s Word in Human Words: The Prospects and Perils of Believing Criticism ." Here is a rundown of the different sessions: Session 1: œTo Err is Human: A Biblical View of Epistemology (Thursday 27 September; 11:30 am) Evangelical Christians often believe that e …

2007-09-13 00:42  Evolution is true; and Adam is historical
Scripture and science may well differ in the boundaries they would draw round early humanity. So writes Derek Kidner in his pithy little commentary, Genesis (vol. 1 in the "Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries" series), p. 28. The observation is key to Kidner's speculation about human beginnings. Kidner accepts the scientific evidence in support of evolution. On the other hand, he is a thoroughly evangelical scholar; accordingly, he maintains that Adam was a real, historical human being. Palaeonto …

"Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science. At the last dim horizon, we search among ghostly errors of observations for landmarks that are scarcely more substantial. The search will continue. The urge is older than history. It is not satisfied and it will not be oppressed. The history of astronomy is a history of receding horizons." Edwin Hubble -Astronomer The Hubble Space Telescope, which has so radically changed and enlarged our pictur …

2007-09-04 08:08  Notes: Slouching Towards Utopia 7.7: The World in 1900: Colonization
Colonization What effect did this enormous expansion in world trade have on standards of living across the globe Some believe that the explosion in world trade (and in international migration) put substantial downward pressure on the wages of labor in the labor-scarce land- and resource-rich parts of the periphery (North America, the southern cone of South America, Australia and New Zealand), gave a boost to real wages in labor-abundant Europe, and raised the returns to owners of capital on both …

Harry Potter is a NOVEL representing a traditional fantasy world of magic versus a materialistic rationalistic scientific world. In other words its a world where magic works outside of science. There is no particular spirituality or religion professed or discussed. Just the good old morality of good versus evil, which is the basis of all religions. However in North Carolina the Christians use it to Wicca Bash. I've built up a bit of a backlog with these snippets. Lord knows how some bloggers manage daily updates! Should medical journals carry drug advertising Yes : Richard Smith (former-Editor of the BMJ). "Major journals like the BMJ have multiple sources of income-subscriptions, classified advertising, non-pharmaceutical advertising, reprints, and sales of articles to other publications. These multiple sources bring independence from each, but at least one is, I believe, much more pernicious than ad …

2007-09-01 09:16  America's Fate Depends Upon Whether Gen. Petraeus is an Honest Man
Having swept both houses in the mid-terms, the party of donkeys may be about to fall off a cliff into the trap set for them by the GOP. Some background: even though, it was Richard Nixon who escalated the Viet Nam war beyond anything previous administrations had dared think about, it was Democrats who paid the price. The GOP convinced the nation that Democrats were weak on defense. The strategy worked to set up Reagan's historic victory. An era of trickle down economics followed and the trend co …

I once took a Middle East archeology course, back when "Muslims" were "Moslems". The professor was a scholar of Egyptology, had directed several digs in North Africa. She was an inspiring lecturer, and somewhere in the middle of the course, she invited her students to do a comparison of the Koran with the Old Testament. I took her up on it, because I wanted a A in the course, but mainly because even a cursory comparison had me laughing out loud. Seems old war-mongering Mohammed lifted, almost ve …
