Political Tango, Women in the Lead Alexei Barrionuevo New York Times 4 de noviembre, 2007 THE Spanish term equidad de …

Martín Tavaut The penguins' onward march 1 de Noviembre de 2007 The Economist The shift …

2007-10-23 06:50 Conference : CONFRONTING SLAVERY. Towards a Dialogue of Cultural Understanding
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil November 22-25, 2007 The objective of this conference is to analyse and discuss the multiple meanings of the experience of slavery in different cultural situations. The ways in which individuals resisted their bondage, adapted or otherwise preserved their heritage, and nonetheless adjusted to the cultural setting of slavery varied across time and space. The ideological dimensions of the slavery legacy often condition the manner by which people relate to one another. The co …

2007-10-19 21:22 Ron Paul: Take abortion out of the federal courts
by Mark Silva Ron Paul, the feisty physician from Texas who has twice served in Congress and amassed a loyal following in his campaign for the Republican Party s presidential nomination, has gained widespread recognition as his party s only anti Iraq-war candidate. But Paul s essential social conservatism may have been overlooked in his Libertarian view of government. Paul wants to abolish the federal income tax that s part of his governmental philosophy. But Paul also wants to ban abortion, pro …

Many books, particularly those published abroad, are not appropriate to the Brazilian teaching context, a state of affairs that makes it difficult for the reviewer to find positive things to say about them. 2007-10-11 15:34 Ennerdale wildcamp post-trip kit report
OK, let's start with the tent. I took the Vango Spectre for it's first wildie and it performed well, but then again conditions were good so it wasn't tested to the max. It was easy to put up, it took about 5 minutes, which I think is acceptable. In the morning there was a small amount of condensation on the underside of the fly, it would have been much less if there had been any sort of a breeze flowing through the end-vents, but there wasn't. I still need to replace the original guy-lines with …

2007-10-10 16:57 Rule #1: Do not shoot at women and children
The vast majority of suicide bombers are men, and they always explode themselves alone. Shooting at a car full of women (and a child) is criminal, no matter what 'good intentions' the shooters have. I find it ironic that US A.I.D. was sent to Iraq to help Iraqis, and their security guards end up killing innocent Iraqis. Obviously the rules for security contractors must be changed. Maybe they should start with the first rule: do not shoot at women and children. U.S. Guards Kill 2 Iraqi Women …

2007-10-07 01:24 A Different Cost of Securitization
This article shows how securitization has enriched middlemen, while impoverishing lenders. The difference between mortgage rates and Treasury rates is now more than a half percentage point higher than in 1972-8. Silva, Lauren and Martin Hutchinson. 2007. "The Cost of Complexity." Wall Street Journal (6 September): p. C 14. "Well, one defense of all the complexity would be that it saved home buyers money -- but that doesn't seem to be the case. It looks like borrowers now pay more for this financ …

Reality bites hard in this "post"-Cold War era when Marxist revolutionaries-turned-democratically elected heads of government resort to their old tricks. Neo-Sandinista Nicaragua, for example, is a key component in the Communist Bloc's Latin American section. Here President Daniel Ortega, who is reverting to his old practices of nationalizing (stealing) private property and punishing political opponents, has revealed his true color: red. Pictured here: Comrade Dan buds around with Iranian Tyrant …

2007-10-02 08:22 U.S AND VENEZUELA UNITED BY BASEBALL
WHAT A GREAT SEASON FOR VENEZUELAN PLAYERS! From Washington DC. Venezuela and the U.S. have ties so strong that cannot be broken by the verbal aggressions of our Venezuelan president against the U.S. These ties have been forged by years of U.S. baseball players playing in Venezuela and Venezuelan players playing in the U.S. My father used to take me, more than 60 years ago, to the old Caracas baseball stadium in San Agustin, to watch games in which Luis Aparicio Sr. (the father of Hall of Fame s …

2007-10-02 06:16 Francis Galton and the Top Fantasy Fighter
Francis Galton (1822-1911) was Charles Darwin's cousin. A true child progeny who learned alphabet by 18 months, Galton later achieved fame as the founder of eugenics. He believed that talent comes from heredity. The perfection of the human race is possible by means of studying and harnessing hereditary forces. There was indeed a great deal of talent running in Darwin's bloodlines. Charles's maternal grandfather, Josiah Wedgwood I (1730-1795), single-handedly launched modern marketing through the …

This weekend brought thousands of crime-fiction authors and fans to Anchorage, Alaska, for the 18th annual Bouchercon World Mystery Convention, named in honor of 20th-century writer, critic, and editor Anthony Boucher. It was a chance for readers to hobnob with novelists whose work they ve admired, and for writers to party amongst themselves and hear what the people who buy their books think of their efforts. Oh, and did I mention the partying As usual, Bouchercon was also the occasion during wh …

2007-09-27 13:49 How Roiders Fared In Their Final At-Bats
On Wednesday, Barry Bonds took his final at-bat wearing a Giants uniform in San Francisco. The appearance was a prime example of why the Giants were bidding farewell to their longtime left fielder. Bonds hit a long fly ball to center that was just shy of the warning track - a ball that in past years would probably have exited the park. As it is, Bonds represents the Steroid Era more than any other player. And though he will probably play again next year, many of his contemporaries that made the …

2007-09-26 16:55 The Parade of the Pitiful
Just as we have begun digesting Columbia University President Lee Bollinger's face-saving rebuke of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad before his "discussion" two days ago, Jon Stewart gives the comedy equivalent stage to Bolivian president Evo Morales on The Daily Show. A sample of Morales' philosophy The worst enemy of humanity is U.S. capitalism. That is what provokes uprisings like our own, a rebellion against a system, against a neoliberal model, which is the representation of a savage capitalism. If the …

2007-09-25 12:04 Exactly what would it have accomplished to "engage in a debate" with Hitler
The Wall Street Journal has a fascinating Op-Ed piece which is food for thought, Liberals or not alike. The question asked is whether Columbia receiving Hitler for a speech in 1939 would have made any difference In other words, are there limits to dialogue and discussion The question is not an idle one as Columbia University, this hallowed bastion of New York Liberalism, is receiving Mahmoud Ahmadinejerk, oops!, Ahmadinejad for a speech while this one is coming to the UN conference as if he were …

2007-09-12 20:13 'Do other Martas exist' | In 'machista' Brazilian culture, one cannot be sure
A young Flamengo fan in the Maracanã celebrates Marta's exploits at the Pan American Games in July. The sign reads, with reference to the Rio-based scarlet-and-black, "Marta in the Mengão is the solution."
