Wall Street Journal : Microsoft Corp. agreed to invest $240 million for a 1.6% stake in Facebook Inc. that values the social-networking site at $15 billion, beating Google Inc. in a closely watched contest. As part of the deal, the two companies expanded their existing advertising agreement. 2007-09-26 19:43  Grandpa Day #2 / Hazelnut, Ricotta, and Lemon Pesto Pasta
Today marks the anniversary of my grandfather's passing, so we're having beans, franks, and potatoes for dinner. You've seen that already (but this time I got some hot dogs from the butcher) (my grandpa would have LOVED my butcher, btw), so I thought I might try to tempt you with a delicious pasta dinner we had earlier this week. For this installment of Presto Pasta Night, hosted by Ruth at Once Upon a Feast, my second in as many weeks (go me!), I give to you: Hazelnut, Ricotta, and Lemon Pesto …

2007-08-21 09:34  Feed Bag
By Prokofy Neva, Media Here's what's coming in on the feed reacting to The Second Life Record: Stranger Ranger, a former rentals agent, opens up the debate about whether blogs should really rightfully call themselves newspapers in the old-fashioned old-media sense. I make the argument that we need a different kind of community journalism and first-person opinionated reporting to cover a closed society like SL; he then elaborates that he doesn't find blogging a lesser form of media than newspaper …

2007-08-13 12:12  Internal communication lessons from customer engagement marketing
Over the last few months, I have watched with interest a host of customer engagement sites which create 'stickyness' based on the audience requirements.  Take for example, Reebok's www.goruneasy.com, or AMD's www.kingofmultitasking.com  or even Sunsilk's www.gangofgirls.com  My favourite is HSBC's www.yourpointofview.com which makes you think and relate to the Bank's core message.  Internal communication campaigns can draw from these insights... ...by aiming at communities of practices ...by cha …

2007-07-19 21:27  Tokyo Police Club/ Dappled Cities- Indianapolis 7/18
Last night a friend and I made the 2 hour jaunt to from Cincinnati to Indy to check out the Tokyo Police Club and Dappled Cities. Having only heard snippets of Dappled Cities prior to the show, it was mainly to see Tokyo Police Club (TPC from now on). The venue was a place called Birdy's Bar and Grill, and held around 500 max. From the name, you wonder what a venue like this might actually look. It looks like a regular bar and grill. Not the place I would have expected to see a show. It was ho …

2007-07-17 18:01  Corn & Barley Salad
Barley makes an excellent and versatile base for a salad. In the summer, when there is a day that is not too hot, I cook up a bunch; it will keep in the fridge or even frozen so you can make salads later on hot, hot days. Of course I use my rice cooker to cook it. I'm actually not sure how cooking just 1/2 cup of barley at a time will work; I always cook at least a cup and divide it. I felt this needed some more colour so I garnished it with little tomatoes. Instead, you could add some diced red …

2007-07-09 12:40  Why Facebook is sticky
Martin and Tony have both posted recently about the "stickyness" of Facebook and the potential importance of this affordance in education. Tony correctly singles out your Facebook "friends" status as an important factor, and Martin just told me more than I need to know about his feelings towards SpongeBob SquarePants (on the other hand, knowledge is power, mwahahaha ). There's no mystery as to why Facebook is "sticky". What Facebook (and Twitter) users do is called " continuous partial attention …

How do spiders construct webs between two distant, separate points Good Day, Brave Answerers of Metafilter. Just how do spiders connect a line of thread between two separate points, e.g. between the middle of two tree trunks or posts, with nothing joining them above ground level Our theories include the spider floats out on a line of thread (which some spiders do at birth, I believe). Or, that they anchor one end, drop down, walk across, then up the other structure, then anchor the other end. I …
