2007-11-05 22:18  Web2.0 Expo Berlin: day 1
And so it started. Today I was able to attend to 4 events: Building Social applications by Stowe Boyd Creating Passionate users by Kathy sierra Opening Keynote by Tim O Reilly Ignite presentations Everything is fine, apart the catering: awful, and a lot of friends are here, just hope that in the next days we'll go more in the details, to say so. Otherwise the risk is to remain on the surface and tell the world the same ol' things... Well, we'll see:) Technorati Tags: web2expoberlin

2007-11-05 14:57  Stowe Boyd: Social Applications
Just my notes: Stowe Boyd spoke about social applivatins and what to consider when building them and I was specially impressed by the theortical part. social= about me (I make the decisions what I use and who my buddy is etc.) social scale:100 or 1000 contacts (depends on the relevance,1000 irrelevant is fine) sociality: what is the etikette Networks: collaboration makes more projects per oerson oossible "e-mail is the place knowledge goes to die" The value of the web is increasing w/ the number …

2007-10-10 06:41  Imagine a Web without browsers

2007-09-04 07:40  Social Networking Spam & Privacy
If you are like the many people getting Quechup invitation spam, consider how it relates to the serious privacy problems with Social Networking.  Quechup automatically imports your Gmail contacts and spams them when you register for their YASNS.  If Bob signs up for it, he is opting into the graph, but he doesn't opt in to spamming Sally.  Sally is included in the graph, whether she opts in to register or not.  Over time, even if Sally resists, she is modeled as a node in the graph.  At first, t …

2007-09-03 04:51  Entrepreneurialitis do you suffer from this
Entrepreneurialitis- the acute or chronic stupidity induced by the stress of entrepreneurial activity. This is a presentation I came across on slideshare (originally delivered by Stowe Boyd at Reboot9 ) and thought I'll share with fellow entrepreneurs here. It talks about the logical fallacies that afflict the thinking of tech (web) entrepreneurs. As I read this, it struck a chord somewhere within and I could relate to some of the points mentioned. So if you are a tech entrepreneur, take a deep …

2007-09-02 21:43  Ideas Worth Stealing: Stowe Boyd s 10-Page Business Plan
Some people think it's best to answer all possible questions in a business plan. Most people who read a lot of business plans would disagree. Webology consultant Stowe Boyd prefers a 10-page document that includes enough information to get the point across, without rambling. Stowe lays out the process. I've written a few business plans in my day, and read lots. Less really is more. This approach might not work if you're launching a commercial bank, or some other company in a heavily-regulated en …

2007-09-01 23:19  Evening Reading: 9/1/07
Many thanks to Ayelet for picking Newsome.Org as one of her 5 Blog Day Picks ! CD Baby is now selling DRM-free digital downloads .  Several of my musician buddies sell their CDs via CD Baby.  It looks like you have to buy the entire record, as opposed to individual songs, but this is still a good development.  Check out Deadwood, by my old buddy Mark Barker .  Good stuff. Amazon, who would own the digital music download market if they hadn't been deeply asleep at the switch, is about to start se …

2007-08-29 21:04  Savaging Scoble
I'm feeling pretty bad for Robert Scoble. Last weekend, Robert released a series of video brain dumps that explained why he thinks " Mahalo, Techmeme and Facebook are going to kick Google 's butt in four years." Since then, he's been the subject of some scathing critiques that not only point out the technological flaws in his argument but do so in an unnecessarily personal way. Danny Sullivan at SearchEngineLand used 4,000 words to argue that Robert's wrong: "Want to be like Robert...and keep eq …

2007-08-29 01:36  It's Conversation, Not Friendship That Social Networks Are Changing
Know anyone with 2,514 friends If you do, you are probably connected to him or her on Facebook, or Twitter. And that person is probably a bit promiscuous with the "confirm" button. I don't think the nature of friendship is changing because of the Internet. But the nature of conversation, which often leads to friendships, has definitely been evolving and the change is positive. I just saw the Whitney Museum's exhibit about Summer of Love, and it's clear that the Internet is no 60s Love-In. But it …

2007-08-28 22:48  Lost My Old Upcoming Account
Just a passing note for any Upcoming contacts who have received a request to make friends from 'stowe.boyd' -- yes that's me. My old account -- where I was 'Stowe' -- was lost along with my old Yahoo identity, the fall out from moving to a new mac, and inadvertently saying 'yes, please email a new password to the email account on record with Yahoo." That email turned out to be my old comcast account, dead these many years. So.... I had to set up a new Yahoo account. The good news is that I was a …

2007-08-28 01:10  Cellphone only homes
I saw this in the NY Times today: Cellphone-Only Homes Hit a Milestone (via a mention by Stowe Boyd at /Message: The Future is Now ). The milestone is a natural consequence of two trends: a glacially slow decline since 2000 in the percentage of households with landlines, and a steep rise in the number of households with cellphones. Mediamark said 84.5 percent of households now have landlines, and 86.2 percent have at least one cellphone. The data was collected through in-home surveys at roughly …

I'm pleased to share a white paper I was hired to co-write with Matt Toll of Factiva of Dow Jones. The topic Social Media Measurement. If you're new to the concept, or just launched a social media program this white paper is for you. Download our White Paper: "Tracking the Influence" (PDF) Traditional Web Analytics are not sufficient to measure what's changing on the web, marketing is distributed across the world wide web, rendering server logs as only one small portion of what needs to be track …

2007-08-19 14:54  Week In Review - Sunday 19 August 2007
I have been on semi vacation, and haven't commented on the world wagging by much this week. But this Week In Review idea may be a permanent thing. CEO Change = Sea Change The stepping aside of Dave Sifry and John Furrier from their CEO roles in Technorati and Podtech, respectively, has been discussed widely. Some view these transitions microeconomically, some as indicators of larger trends in the tech world. Arrington at Techcruch suggests that Sifry's leaving, and the layoff of eight others, is …

2007-08-14 17:33  TripIT Reviewed
Stowe Boyd's detailed review of TripIT is well worth a read. Sounds like TripIT provides some of the features I wish Dopplr had - including the ability to pull travel information out of the confirmation emails generated by the airlines, as well as more granular (hour by hour) info about overlaps in your travel with friends. All they're missing is the obligatory elided-vowel-of-web-2.0, which I think would make them TripT. Will this be enough to push a switch to TripIt I'll let you know once I ge …

2007-08-14 10:03  Basement.org Is 2nd "Basement" Result On Google - Cool()
I was digging through the often enjoyable /Message and found a post where Stowe Boyd (proprietor of /Message) searched the word "message" on Google and found that his blog came in 9th. Not too shabby. Wikipedia came out on top (as is often the case). So I decided to give "basement" a whirl and oddly enough, as of this post, it comes in second: This is kind of exciting...or it isn't, depending on how you look at it. I see two possible explanations: Basement.org is truly a first-class destination …

2007-08-13 17:33  Web 2.0 and the New Tribalism
After reading my latest post regarding the Survey on Social Networks Worldwide, Stowe Boyd wrote a very interesting post about Social Networks And The New Tribalism. Boyd writes: "I think a new tribalism is starting to emerge through social connection on the web. A bottom-up, emergent sense of allegiance through web-enabled communities is supplanting twentieth century, industrial era alienation. While tribalism has its dark side - a tendency toward inter-tribal conflict and aggression - the wiri …

2007-08-12 16:47  the real power and threat of social networks
" The deep structure of future human connection is being contrived, now, on the web, and it will slowly unseat other systems, like an oak tree growing in a churchyard, encroaching on the cathedral's foundations with roots that are deeper and stronger than artifice can achieve. This is in us, it is in the wiring, and social tools are allowing us to rechannel our ancient tribal past in a post-industrial future. Nothing can stop it." Stowe Boyd Posted by Ed Cotton

words and pictures by Brian Solis The bloggers conference started with some roses, a sense of style and a really BIG bang to tap us into the tech conversation. It also unintentionally became the first conference showcasing the iPhone as the must have accessory for geeks.
