2007-11-06 16:42 Technical Web 2.0 Startup Basics and Software Quality Improvements
A lot of people have great ideas for new web -platforms/-software but simply lack the knowledge about an engineering approach to software development. This article addresses those companies/startups (seen as software buyers->customers), as well as software developers. So please don´t get confused when i´m trying to bring examples for both of those groups. When you start a software project, you need to ensure your services are better in comparison to others. From a startup/customer point of view … Read more on “MP:Blog - Mediaprojekte”

2007-11-02 00:53 WADL Documentation XSLT Updated
I've updated the WADL documentation stylesheet, primarily to; Fix a bug with finding and displaying XML Schema Make it compatible with xsltproc (and hopefully most other XSLT1.0 processors that understand EXSLT node-set ) Generate valid XHTML The hard part was getting support for xsltproc; while switching over to the node-set function was easy, it uncovered other bugs around how libxml handles copying namespace nodes; an ugly and tiresome hack was required to work around it, but it seems to work … Read more on “mnot’s Web log”
2007-10-15 20:12 YUI Style AJAX Progress Indicator
If you follow my blog, you have no doubt noticed that I have been taking a tour through the Yahoo! User Interface Library (you can read my previous posts here, here and here ). Well, I think I have finally made my way through a majority of the content and feel like I have come out with a few new UI components that I can incorporate into my current web app. But before I move on, I thought I would write one last brief post describing how you can incorporate the YUI style progress panel into yo … Read more on “Matt Berseth”
2007-10-14 11:17 Improving the Presentation of an Extra-Wide GridView
The codebase for the web application I am currently working on is pretty new. We ported our legacy application from .Net 1.1 to .Net 2.0 and in the process we did a complete redesign of our presentation and business logic layers. However, we did not do the same with our data model. We upgraded from SQL Server 2000 to 2005, but for the most part we kept the exact same datamodel. So while from a technology standpoint we have a completely new platform, our data model is about 5 years old. Over … Read more on “Matt Berseth”
2007-10-10 19:18 YUI Style Yes/No Confirm Dialog with the ModalPopupExtender
If you have read a few of my most recent posts ( here and here ) you have probably noticed that I have been spending some time with Yahoo!'s YUI control library . During my most recent visit I came across a great looking confirm dialog . It's simple and straight to the point ... Live Demo (FF, IE6, IE7) | Download The team I currently work on had already been debating whether or not we needed to replace our existing standard confirm dialog with something a little better looking. 2007-10-06 16:46 A YUI DataTable Styled GridView
Lately I have been spending more and more time browsing through the YUI Developer pages. I have worked exclusively with Microsoft's .Net Framework for the past 5 years, but I find it interesting to learn about other competing technologies as well (I even went so far to get certified on Sun's Java platform ). I don't know if it is boredom or curiosity, but I generally find it interesting to see what tools, development environments, programming languages and other techniques non-Microsoft engin … Read more on “Matt Berseth”
2007-10-02 19:50 ModalPopup with Multiple Cancel Buttons
I recently stumbled across the following post . In the entry, the author describes a simple modal popup he has created for his hotel reservation ASP.NET AJAX web application. While developing the popup control, he ran into a problem when trying to include both a 'Close' button at the bottom of the dialog as well as a close 'X' button in the top right corner: I ran into a bit of a stumbling block because I wanted to have multiple buttons close the popup. I had the OK button and the cancel butt … Read more on “Matt Berseth”
2007-10-01 14:35 TDO Mini Forms v0.71 and Wordpress 2.3
I released TDO Mini Forms with minimal testing on Wordpress 2.3. Seemed to be okay. However, I just upgraded the demo site to Wordpress 2.3 and I noticed some "issues". I will be attempting to push out a release soon to resolve them: The widget panel is slightly messed up. Obviously lots of the Theme widget stuff for Wordpress has been updated. The code in the plugin still works, but the admin menu looks horrible. Mostly because the stylesheet for the normal Theme widgets was moved from wp-admin … Read more on “The Dead One's LiveJournal”
2007-09-30 18:51 Moving from Blogger to Wordpress
-by Sig of LiveToEat I just moved my blog from Blogger to Wordpress, and published this article there to share my thoughts and experiences on the process. Republishing here on Indira's request, for those who are contemplating this move. First of all, I am not recommending everyone to move to Wordpress, I think Blogger has its own advantages, it really is much simpler to use than Wordpress, if you are just starting out. But I wanted to list out my reasons for the move, and to give you some tips i … Read more on “Dining Hall”
2007-09-28 02:07 Changing the Sheet names in SQL Server RS Excel: QnD XSLT
I had a nice note from Gilda Tramontana this week, asking for more information about something I'd posted about revising the Excel output you get from SQL Server Reporting Services. Someone had noted, in the forum thread that Gilda referenced, that the way that documentation acknowledges the limitations of the default Excel output is "amusing". Apparently the term they use in the docs is "unique attributes" and, believe me, they're not talking about primary keys here. In another dev universe, … Read more on “TechSpoken”
2007-09-26 21:28 More Sample AjaxControlToolkit TabContainer Themes ...
After working on a YUI TabView theme for the AjaxControlToolkit's TabContainer control, I thought it might be fun to create a few more TabContainer themes for some of the other tab-style controls that I have seen floating around the web. I was especially curious in seeing what it would take to include images in each of the tab panel header's. Below are the controls I was targeting, where on the Internet I found them, and a short description of what it took to create the corresponding … Read more on “Matt Berseth”

2007-09-23 19:50 Creating a YUI TabView Style Theme for the AjaxControlToolkit's TabContainer Control
I was browsing the YUI documentation and I came across a very nice looking tab control. I thought it would be interesting to create a similar styled theme for the AjaxControlToolkit's TabContainer control. I don't mind the default XP-themed TabContainer, but I think the XP style tab's are getting a little bit dated. I had not previously created a theme for a TabContainer, so I had no idea what to expect. It turns out it was very easy to do. Below are the steps I followed ... 2007-09-10 14:16 Part II: Struts 2 XML experiments using XSLTResult
In my last blog entry I described how Struts 2 outputs XML using XSLTResult. In this entry I will answer the second part of the query that I sent to the Struts mailing list and introduce a new XSLTResult, one which handles XSLT 2.0. Imagine you want to use an XSLT 2.0 stylesheet with Struts 2. The default XSLTResult expects you to use the Xalan XSLT processor by default. However, occasionally it is easier for me to use XSLT 2.0. So I downloaded the Saxon XSLT 2.0 processor libraries (freeware ve … Read more on “Mark McLaren's Weblog”
2007-09-10 14:15 Part I: Struts 2 XML experiments using XSLTResult
I started teaching myself Struts 2 recently and it includes a new way to work with XML. Essentially, Struts 2 Actions are all POJOs. The usual default ResultType for a Struts action is a DispatcherResult (which renders JSPs and such). Alternatively you can use the XSLTResult to work with XML/XSLT as your view technology. When I first looked at XSLTResult I posted a couple of queries on the Struts mailing list. At that time I didn't understand XSLTResult and am now pleasantly surprised. In this a … Read more on “Mark McLaren's Weblog”
