2007-11-06 07:58  MAC - The Stylistics
Efter detta inlägg bojkottar jag nog MAC. Kanske. Lipstick In Vogue - Neutral mid-tone brown with gold pearlized pigments (Fros …

Via the admirable Mr E, I find Matthew Parris offering some sound advice to the Tories. Parris, one of the most urbane journalists working in London, found himself making an argument he didn't, on reflection, quite believe: Here was the wise argument: œDavid Cameron and his Conservative colleagues were entitled to their half-hour of fun at Prime Minister s Questions, at Brown s expense. They landed their punches. But they should not think this will serve as opposition policy for the next two yea …

2007-10-12 14:24  If a text is literary, its dynamic equivalent in translation must also be literary
I don t see why there cannot be wide agreement on the above thesis. Iyov, I know, concurs: œI prefer translations that are faithful to the stylistic choices of the original. I know from offline discussion that Rich Rhodes also concurs. But that means that dynamic equivalent translations like the Good News Bible and the Contemporary English Version are improperly done. For vast swathes of the Old Testament, the translation they offer is not literary enough. Is it possible to translate a literar …

2007-10-12 11:22  Elle or Alyssa Each Milano Does It Well
I often wonder whether the genre of "art-rock" will be looked back upon as the epitome of stylistic innovation in this current decade. While the past several decades have embraced us with varieties of synth-pop, grunge, and adult alternative, it is difficult to argue that there is a specific style in the '00s that has truly taken over the entire music scene. From my point of view, it has been more of an eclectic mixture of past styles if anything. This is not to say I am bashing our current scen …

2007-10-10 12:07  Say Hi to a Beautiful Change
Yeah, no Radiohead feature today. While I love the band and the new album to death, there is no point in covering something when virtually every site is writing the same thing. Maybe a review will come in the coming month but, in the mean time, perhaps we can try something else for a bit... While it is pointless to attempt unless under dire circumstances, there are a number of ways to judge a band prematurely before even listening to them. The two most obvious methods are based around two aspect …

2007-10-09 16:15  Soul Music: Marie Knight and Mary D. Williams
Charles Hughes writes: The gospel singer has served multiple roles in African-American life across the centuries: preacher, teacher, community leader, political organizer, social glue, entertainer, et cetera.  During gospel s (first) golden age, in the middle decades of the twentieth century, stars like Mahalia Jackson, Dorothy Love Coates and Sam Cooke not only brought the moaning thunder of the black church to a larger audience, but also helped create several secular genres in the process. On …

2007-10-09 14:09  Shiina and Tokyo Jihen Return for #3
As I have said numerous times before, I try to keep my musical taste as expansive as possible. Whether it be in regard to a style or originative country, the world is too vastly occupied with fresh ideas to ignore the musical output stemming from specific countries and ideologies. In my opinion, a close-minded approach to art is truly a horrible thing to encounter. When I compiled my somewhat controversial " Top 50 Albums of 2006 " last year, the only personal rule I had was that the respected a …

2007-10-09 03:56  Big, fat and hard-boiled
It has been said with some justification that Rex Stout was the only crime writer able successfully to combine the English tradition of the eccentric detective, in the person of Nero Wolfe, with the harder-boiled American tradition, in the person of Archie Goodwin. That s a fair assessment, and Stout s achievement is all the more impressive when one considers that Goodwin narrates the stories. He must thus tell a story in one style while acting in another. How does Stout pull off this balancing …

2007-10-08 03:47  Schmickler and Cruise Combine for Pluramon s Best Effort
When it comes to music, age knows no limit. While it is customary to expect genius composers like Philip Glass or Ryuichi Sakamoto to continue creating music into their latter years due to the precise and delicate nature of their instrumentally laden craft, there are a handful of aged individuals who can tackle the art of pop music willfully without coming across as desperate or stylistically frail. This being said, many modern bands would be hesitant if their lead singer was a 50-year-old women …

2007-10-05 21:12  When Blogs Attract (and Other Documentary Quandries)
There are a couple of pieces I want to point to which, while writing about my new film, have also dealt with the interesting dance that I sometimes must maneuver as it relates to my work here at the blog and my take on the nature of nonfiction circa early October 2007. Mark Olsen has a great piece in today's LA Times that dives into this headlong.  An excerpt: "Though the blog began in the summer of 2005 as a direct outgrowth of working on "About a Son," it has since taken on a life of its own. …

2007-10-05 11:07  Chris Robley Teaches Us the Drunken Dance of Modern Man In Love
As many aspiring hopefuls could tell you, the task of coming off as a genuinely expressive songwriter can be a grueling task. The general audience is often granted with the perception that, while many of these artists sing songs of brooding unrequited love and lonely intentions, there remains a likelihood that their fame, fortune, and recognition contradicts any assumption for a melancholic life. It begs the question: how could a successful musician sound so sad Well, though it sounds terribly c …

TheWorldofJonah Forget ya Dannys, Justins, Willys, Olas, Darrens, and Mans-lets get down to business here. We're talking pop business. Real, deep and hard. 2007-09-25 14:02  CINEMA SHITHOUSE: SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM LISZTOMANIA (1975)
After recently reading a biography and overview of the works of British director Ken Russell, I was consumed with a longing to once more sit through my favorite of his looney filmic catalogue, the much-maligned LISZTOMANIA (1975), but after some research I found out that it's not available on DVD in the States. Luckily for me I know of a terrific source for "gray market" DVDs, and they had the film, albeit a transfer from a pan-and-scan VHS tape, so I watched it again and laughed my ass off with …

2007-09-20 15:24  Zodiac
I found David Fincher's Zodiac to be compelling and absorbing. Though, interestingly, the reasons I liked the movie are not far from the reasons Kim hated it. Zodiac is so cool and detached as to be almost hysterical, as well as creepy, in its insistence upon objectivity (both in terms of its point of view, and in terms of its excessive care in making supposedly "authentic" re-creations of 1970s decors). How does the film work Despite what I might have expected from the director of Seven, Zodiac …

2007-09-11 13:38  Single Minded: "Baby"
Charles Hughes writes: œNeo-soul never quite lived up to its promise.  During the heyday of the R&B sub-genre, let s say 1997 to 2001, the emergence of artists like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, and Musiq Soulchild seemed to signal a return to or at least an emphasis on the sounds, themes and energy of soul culture. This was very exciting for those of us who, though loving much of 1990s R&B and hip-hop, craved soul s deep-water intensity, and longed to hear some new voices enter the conversation. …

In an e-mail entitled "Why you're bad for democracy," a reader takes me to task for this post, in which I passed along a study analyzing the political contributions of journalists. ( The study said that reporters give $9 to Democrats and liberal causes for every $1 given to Republicans and conservative causes.) 2007-09-06 02:16  Unmasqued: An Erotic Novel of The Phantom of the Opera
Colette Gale's Unmasqued is a retelling of the story of The Phantom of the Opera which adds erotic sexual scenes, a good dose of BDSM, and a whole new ending. The dedication reads, "To all the women who thought Christine should have stayed with the Phantom." My reaction: this is a seriously dark, kinky, sex-driven story, and while I never read or saw Phantom, I can see how Gale had ample room to play with the themes of forbidden love, sexual tension, and sexual control in the original story. Mys …

Buying clothes can require some seriously intense soul searching. Shoppers must ask themselves morally defining questions like "Do these jeans make my butt look spectacular or just okay" and "Can I wear this T-shirt even though it says 'Cancun' across my chest and I've never been to Mexico" With all these important stylistic queries running through our heads, it's no surprise that we often skirt around much darker issues.
