"What really struck me about the Techmeme leaderboard (beyond, of course, Publishing 2.0 debuting at #58) is how it is dominated by media brands. And when I say media brands, I mean TechCrunch, GigaOm, Search Engine Land, Engadget and Gizmodo. There are very few "blogs" on in the "traditional" sense, i.e. a SINGLE voice, like Dave Winer or Jeff Jarvis. Via Bruce Sterling .

2007-10-04 19:41  Disincentives For Gaming The TechMeme Leaderboard
Every ranking system is at risk for gaming, and the TechMeme Leaderboard is no different, as Dave Winer points out regarding today s pile on to Jason Calacanis Web 3.0 meme. (Ironically, Jason himself anticipated the problem when the Leaderboard debuted.) This was a problem before the Leaderboard, but providing a lasting reward to this behavior certainly runs the risk of exacerbating it. So here are some suggestions for Gabe to callibrate the TechMeme Leaderboard so that there is less incentive …

People used to say (and maybe they still do) that you can stay up-to-date and fairly well informed of the goings on in the world just by reading all of the stories on the front page of The New York Times each day. Well, in webby world, you can do worse than breezing through TechCrunch to get a quick read on all that's going on in web land. Which is helpful as I've been very very busy of late. Extraordinary things seem to go on when we're occupied with other things, isn't it amazing In any event, …

One of the many reasons why Techmeme is the leading tech news aggregator among tech insiders is that it aggregates traditional media brands alongside new media brands. wowhsa! The financial Times is reporting today that the Pentagon's computers were hacked by the Chinese Military in June of this year! If it is true then this is the first publicised attack on US computer systems by the Chinese Military since the Titan Rain attacks of 2003. According to the article: The PLA regularly probes US military networks and the Pentagon is widely assumed to scan Chinese networks but US officials said the penetration in June raised concerns to a new level because of fears that Ch …

First a few months ago it was Paul Graham laying the slap down that Microsoft was dying a slow and ugly death which encouraged more than a few people to jump on the bandwagon - which is nothing new - or they were wondering what drugs Paul was on. But then predicting the death of Microsoft is a popular past time when you want to grab some readers on a boring day on Techmeme and in some case as become almost an art form. 2007-09-03 06:35  SES San Jose 2007 write-up
I'm really late giving thoughts on SES San Jose 2007, but better late than never! For much of 2007, we've been working to get more Googlers doing different types of communication. I really saw that effort bear fruit in San Jose. From the webspam team, Greg Grothaus and Shashi Thakur were first-time SES speakers and did a great job. Also from webspam, Evan Roseman spoke again. We also had SES veterans like Shuman and Amanda Camp, plus lots of other speakers. I'll try to post about all the Googler …

Todd Bishop of the Seattle-PI (go Seattle!) is reporting that Microsoft and Eolas have settled their patent dispute ( Techmeme discussion ): Flash users will recognize this as the cause of the annoying 'click to activate' problem in Internet Explorer that hit all Flash applications that used the embed tag. 2007-08-30 11:35  Facebook s œfriends.getLists and œfriends.getListsMembers - Finally
Finally, it seems Facebook will solve the missing piece of Facebook. Though details are not public yet, Facebook has added two new api calls - "friends.getLists" and "friends.getListsMembers". I think it means Facebook will be adding a way for me to group my friends - hopefully, a "newsfeed" for each group is part of this new friendlist feature they are working on. Mashable wonders if these calls are an attempt to compete against linkedin and slide - I don't think so. Personally, I think Faceboo …

blogosphere jumping the shark terminology I wanted to take a few seconds to introduce you to a phrase that is being bandied around the blogosphere recently, "jumping the shark." 2007-08-29 21:04  Savaging Scoble
I'm feeling pretty bad for Robert Scoble. Last weekend, Robert released a series of video brain dumps that explained why he thinks " Mahalo, Techmeme and Facebook are going to kick Google 's butt in four years." Since then, he's been the subject of some scathing critiques that not only point out the technological flaws in his argument but do so in an unnecessarily personal way. Danny Sullivan at SearchEngineLand used 4,000 words to argue that Robert's wrong: "Want to be like Robert...and keep eq …

2007-08-29 14:32  Google as The Bridge to the Web (Scoble's Right About the Weather If not the Rain)
The web is a human created directory. It's strange to have to say this but a lot of people seem to not appreciate the reality: the web is built by human beings and, like all such constructs from cities to the corner store, there is a very clear method to the madness. What's more the web -- like cities and corner stores -- tends to be quite usable and effective precisely because it is the result of the lived in experience of human beings. If Google and the rest of the search engines were to magic …

2007-08-29 13:10  Does Facebook Represent a Google Killer
I saw a really interesting (and controversial) viewpoint by Robert Scoble that I thought was very fitting into my look at Facebook this week. He contends that Facebook, along with Mahalo and Techmeme, represent a force that will spell trouble for Google within the next four years. Here, check out these videos by Scoble: Part I of Social Graph Based Search. 14:41 minutes. Part II of Social Graph Based Search. 15 minutes. And a bonus round III. 6 minutes. His theme was very similar to that of Jaso …

The Google Phone rumors are continuing to roll but no one seems to know exactly Google plans. Engadget today reported that Google is planning a linux based OS for the mobile platform. Google s mobile project started with the acquisition of a mobile software company called Android late in 2005. They have developed this mobile operating system, and reportedly Google is looking for a mobile phone manufacturers and carriers to market the system. Google mobile OS makes sense because with this Google …

Well, so far this week I've done my two Kyte videos, which got a lot of, um, conversations going. Everywhere I go people talk with me about my ideas of friends and/or search now. Much better than being asked "how's Maryam feeling" about how her pregnancy is going. But, those are just "quick hits."
