Link: Iran's nuclear program irreversible: president | Reuters. "TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's nuclear program is "irreversible," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday, voicing continued defiance in the face of possible new international sanctions on the Islamic Republic. Ahmadinejad also reiterated that Iran now has 3,000 centrifuges, which are used to enrich uranium. Enriched uranium can fuel power plants but also, if refined further, provide material for bombs. Western experts say 3,000 …

udicial authorities in Iran have sentenced two women activists who participated in a peaceful protest against discriminatory laws in June 2006 to more than 30 months in jail and ten lashes. The harsh sentences come amid the recent arrests of more than a dozen student activists, the government closure of the popular Hammihan newspaper, and pressure on Iran's Labour News Agency to stop its activities, in another sweeping crackdown on the Islamic Republic's civil society. Delaram Ali, who is a memb …

2007-11-04 16:51  How to Rein in Iran Without War
By Jim Hoagland (THE WASHINGTON POST, 04/11/07): Iran is working to produce a 20-to-50-pound stockpile of enriched uranium that it can use to build atomic weapons within eight to 10 weeks, once it decides to do so - and has consistently lied to the United Nations about those efforts. That headline conclusion is one of two basic points that I draw from a series of private meetings on Iran 's nuclear ambitions involving diplomats, leading academic experts, senior military officers and experienced …

2007-10-23 18:26  Turkey is a thorn in the side of a cosy western consensus
By Slavoj Zizek, international director of the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities (THE GUARDIAN, 23/10/07): Recent days have seen Dick Cheney and Tony Blair point belligerent fingers at Tehran, but both spoke in the slipstream of Bernard Kouchner, who a month ago warned the world that it should prepare for war over Iran's nuclear programme. "We have to prepare for the worst, and the worst is war," said the French minister of foreign affairs. The swell of rhetoric - which culminated in Preside …

2007-10-22 13:25  Iran s power struggle intensifies
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 22/10/07): Saeed Jalili, who replaced Ali Larijani as Iran's top nuclear negotiator at the weekend, is a man of strong moral views who believes spiritual values must inform political actions. His absolute conviction of the rightness of Iran's cause, and his loyalty to his old friend Iran's hardline president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, may make him an awkward interlocutor when talks with the EU on the nuclear dossier resume in Rome tomorrow. In a lengthy interview condu …

2007-10-17 05:45  Will Russia now defend Iran
President Vladimir Putin who is on a state visit to Tehran has issued a warning to the USA not to attack Iran. Putin stopped short of offering a security guarantee to the Iranians, but the fact that he went to Tehran and spoke out so strongly is almost certain to raise morale amongst Iranians, whilst at the same time giving cause for concern to the warmongers. As Neil Clark points out, what is needed is a defence agreement between all those countries that are opposed to the further advance of gl …

2007-10-16 13:16  From Russia with pragmatism
By Simon Tisdall (THE GUARDIAN, 16/10/07): In typical he-man style, Russia's Vladimir Putin ignored an alleged plot to assassinate him and went ahead today with a visit to Tehran. Iran says the plot story was black propaganda fabricated by its enemies, which may well be true. Historically speaking, Russians need no outside help in doing away with their leaders. They manage perfectly well by themselves. It is also true though that, over the centuries, Persian-Russian relations have been spattered …

On November 20, 1979, worldwide attention was focused on Tehran, where the Iranian hostage crisis was entering its third week. The same morning the first of a new Muslim century hundreds of gunmen stunned the world by seizing Islam s holiest shrine, the Grand Mosque in Mecca. Armed with rifles that they had smuggled inside coffins, these men came from more than a dozen countries, launching the first operation of global jihad in modern times. Led by a Saudi preacher named Juhayman al Uteybi, they …

I'd been meaning to post a link to this piece in 5th October's Guardian, as it summed up a lot of my feelings on the matter. While not supporting a generalised boycott of Israeli academia, I have some misgivings about such a boycott's having been declared unlawful, especially as no reasons have been given in support of such an opinion. The threats cited by Dr Gopal to academic freedom in the United States are well-known: Organisations such as Campus Watch monitor what academics write and teach, …
