Martín Tavaut The penguins' onward march 1 de Noviembre de 2007 The Economist The shift …

2007-11-02 11:02 The Economist om religion och politik
The Economist senaste nummer handlar om "Faith and Politics".

2007-10-30 07:29 Naomi Klein hyllas i SVT
För att citera Norberg: Before you blame the Iraq war on Milton Friedman, wouldn t it be honest …

2007-10-26 16:05 Balancegang
Denmark retains its leading position for 2008-12. The country stands out for the successful balance that it appears to have struck between the state and the market. Product markets operate efficiently and labour markets are flexible (with low non-wage labour costs and few restrictions on hiring and firing). Denmark compensates for its high tax burden with the quality of its public goods, notably infrastructure and higher education. Fra den omtalte Economistundersøgelse. - Det der selvfølgelig er …

Cristina, a familiar enigma The Economist 18 de Octubre de 2007 The president's wife seems certain to succeed him, but will she cool an overheating economy ABROAD she is sometimes compared to Hillary Clinton.
Matt Simmons, the leading investment banker to the oil industry, who has worked tirelessly to lift public awareness of Peak Oil, also raised the specter of shortages, telling the audience that market allocation problems in the near future would almost certainly induce œhoarding behavior among the public that would cripple the economy, lead to enforced rationing, and shock the nation. 2007-10-20 05:42 What an enlightened Left we have
I must confess that, in the present days, almost the only way I can write about the vicissitudes of the Italian Left is to do so in English (and this is likely why my posts on that subject aren t as many as they should ...). I guess this is a tedium-related problem, due to a sort of saturation effect too many disappointments, frustrations, rages. It s a hard life being a reformist in Italy, or even having been so for years, as I can testify from personal experience. Yet, when I write in English …

2007-10-18 22:39 To find the best deals in a bad lending market - go where the money (loan) ALREADY is.
The financing market for commercial investment real estate turned close to upside down in July and August and it's hardly gotten around to righting itself. I saw an article recently by the chief economist for the international brokerage network NAI saying that typically these things take about 18 months to correct. All is not horrible, though (unlike the housing market in many places around the country, like Poinciana, Florida). Most larger institutional owners (REITS, pension funds, and the …

A special report from the Economist on innovation. Economist : JOHN KAO is an innovation guru described as œMr Creativity by this newspaper a decade ago. 2007-10-17 16:07 How the new global economy is the wild card in sustaining the housing markets
I was somewhat surprised to see very thoughtful comments on Monday's piece The Fed's housing market objectives ... all three seem to understand that the US economy and housing market has to be managed within the context of the global economy and other countries' housing markets... it's refreshing to see such thinking because the real estate community is so local, local and local and sometimes doesn't see the bigger economic picture that is driving their markets. Friend Dave G. at LakePlace offer …

2007-10-16 18:42 Al Gore s œPulp Fiction
Guest Commentary by Edward Cline: As years go by the idea of Nobel Prizes for peace and literature becomes more and more lunatic. The criteria by which literature is measured and recognized by the Norwegian Nobel Committee remain unfathomable to an outside but critical observer. This year the Prize for literature went to Doris Lessing, a British author who wrote stories with ever-in-vogue feminist themes. But the individuals who screen nominees and award the Prizes for literature could just as w …

2007-10-16 10:35 Hitler's Pope
Two myth-busting articles today 'Righteous Among the Nations' and Why Pope Pius XII Was Right. The Hitler's Pope myth has managed to stick despite the author of the book reversing himself in the Economist on Dec. 9, 2004. I can think of no other case in which an author has renounced his own theory and yet that theory has held on so tenaciously. The herd, it seems, desperately wants to believe that holy men like Venerable Pope Pius XII were hypocritical pigs.

NY Times reports that large banks are working on a perpetual motion machine: The new entity, called a Master Liquidity Enhancement Conduit, or M-LEC, could raise as much as $200 billion or more through the issuance of its own securities, and use the money to buy securities that otherwise might be dumped on the market. Just what we need, another circus, but this time with More Smoke! More Mirrors! I am skeptical, obviously. But don't take my word for it. Though yesterday s move was meant to re …
