2007-09-20 20:15  Dealers Still Advertising Higher 2007 Fuel Economy Ratings
A breathless, critical report has been issued by CNW Marketing research stating that Toyota dealers are still claiming that the Prius can achieve 60 miles per gallon. It has been reasonably well known in the automotive world for years that EPA fuel economy ratings were generally higher than what people could expect to see "in the real world." Sure, it's theoretically possible to drive like a stereotypical septuagenarian and achieve those window sticker numbers, but more likely than not, we're ac …

2007-08-26 11:00  Video of the Week: Literary Devices Edition
Post by Kasey Kagawa This week's lesson is the metaphor, a common literary device, often used with great effect by skilled writers and even more frequently horribly abused by mediocre writers; I'll leave it up to the readers to decide which we fall under. As an example, this footage of David Coulthard's spin out and fire during practice at the Turkish Grand Prix is a perfect metaphor for the massive flaming failure that is year's Formula 1 world championship. We've had wonderful era of earnest c …

2007-08-13 22:09  Grand Prix thoughts
A few random Grand Prix related thoughts, as I've no Fun-1 to post them on these days. I've ranted in the past about the ludicrous ticket prices for the British Grand Prix - £99 is the cheapest and that's sold out, the cheapest currently available is £199. The high prices are not the circuit owners fault, purely Bernie's greed. For those who don't know, the BRDC (who own Silverstone) pay the FIA a huge fee to hold the Grand Prix, which they can only recoup through ticket sales. Advertising, TV r …

2007-07-22 18:16  Ralf forgives Heidfeld for collision
Ralf Schumacher believes that the FIA was right to not penalise Nick Heidfeld for the suspect moved he pulled which ended the Toyota driver's home Grand Prix at the Nurburgring this afternoon. Heidfeld's dive up the inside of the final corner was reviewed by the sport's governing body and the BMW Sauber risked losing his sixth placed finish if found guilty of dangerous driving.

2007-07-17 02:47  Hollywood riding with Toyota United: by Jay Hollywood
With all the wild and crazy things that I, Hollywood, get to do...sometimes I forget about the perks of my job. One of the greatest perks: Taking out cyclists for some epic rides, like the time I got to take the Toyota United team for a killer MN ride before the Nature Valley Grand Prix. This is not only a top domestic team, but they got Henk Vogels, a multiple top 10 finisher at Roubaix amongst other Spring Classic finishes. And come by the shop to check out the hot signed jersey by Henk! Werry …

2007-07-15 14:41  D1 In The Desert: Jalopnik at the D1 Grand Prix, Day Two: Finals
[ Las Vegas stringer Curtis Walker, who hasn't yet sublimated in the desert heat despite short odds to the contrary, brings us day two of the 2007 D1 Grand Prix. ]. Narratively, we're always drawn to both underdogs and classic, rear-drive Japanese cars. So we caught up with John Russakoff to get the lowdown on his 1984 Toyota Corolla, the oldest drift car competing in this year's D1 circuit. The AE86 entry started out as a $200 "piece of shit." Twenty-five thousand bucks and a year- and-a-half l …

2007-07-14 08:38  D1 In The Desert: Jalopnik at the D1 Grand Prix, Day One: Practice
[ Our Las Vegas stringer Curtis Walker is on scene making with the photos and words -- ed. ] With temps pegged in the triple digits by Friday afternoon, the air above the Las Vegas Motor Speedway hinted at a firestorm. The Formula D Grand Prix is in town, and that means wafts of tire smoke and smolder hanging over the Mojave for most of the weekend. Last year, D1 's inaugural drift event was such a hit with the drift kids that more drivers and cars are here from Japan. With 13 of Nippon's finest …

2007-06-06 14:38  Go Ahead, Kick The Tires: Ford Wins Big, Mercedes Improves in Initial Quality Study
The powers that be J.D.Power say FoMoCo's breached the top three in its Initial Quality study, and Mercedes is the most improved automaker of all. The study is fielded each year to determine which cars record the fewest problems in the first 90 days of ownership. Ford large's Lincoln brand reached all the way up to third, while Mercury moved up eight points from 2006 to eighth and Ford is up five spots to 10th. Mercedes jumped from 25th in 2006 to fifth in 2007. Bruce continues to elude Porsche, …
