2007-11-06 09:24  The (not so) hidden goals of Prism, AIR and Silverlight
The Prism project (formerly WebRunner [1 ] has recently been announced by Mozilla Labs. In this announcement, a sentence has been ruffling a few feathers at Adobe and Microsoft (emphasis mine): Unlike Adobe AIR and Microsoft Silverlight, we re not building a proprietary platform to replace the web. We think the web is a powerful and open platform for this sort of innovation, so our goal is to identify and facilitate the development of enhancements that bring the advantages of desktop apps to the …

2007-09-04 01:01  What about Sun embracing JavaScript
As a followup to my post about Java yesterday, I wanted to throw out some quick observations about JavaScript and where I think it might be able to help Sun revive the interest in Java as a cutting edge platform. I say "observations" because I haven't really come up with a hard-and-fast conclusion about what all this stuff means in the big picture, but I think the following points to something pretty interesting: * Sun actually owns the trademark to the name JavaScript. Despite the fact that it …

2007-09-02 01:19  Adobe AIR: 10 reasons to love it, 10 reasons to hate it.
I attended two days of briefings on Adobe's developer-focused products, especially the forthcoming AIR (Adobe Integrated Runtime). In essence, AIR is the Flash player supplemented by additional features to enable applications that are not browser-hosted, but installed as desktop applications. AIR is great for some scenarios, weak for others. Here's 10 reasons to love it: 1. Fast execution. ActionScript 3.0 has a JIT (just-in-time) compiler, putting it on a par with Java or .NET for raw performan …

2007-07-12 01:24  Adobe OnAir Seattle
I went to Adobe's OnAir Seattle yesterday, which was a really interesting event that I'd recommend attending if you have the time. Unfortunately, I had to leave before the end of the day, but here's a summary of the notes I took while I was there. The Big Picture Adobe's goal is to let web developers can use their existing skills ( HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Flash, and Flex) to create desktop applications. AIR (formerly Apollo) provides cross-platform installation and application updates, a local da …

2007-07-03 14:04  onAir Weblog
So I guess I'm just becoming an Adobe AIR fanboy. I don't really mind because unlike many forms of fandom, you actually get something in return for your efforts. This site is a blog that will fill you in on what is going on in the world of Adobe AIR. If you can throw together a web page, and can download Aptana you can build cross platform applications.

2007-06-16 08:42  YouTube Launches Adobe-Powered Remix Tool
YouTube has launched its Remixer tool, which is available on TestTube. Check it out here. The remixer lets you add effects and graphics, text and audio, overlays and transitions to your YouTube videos, directly in your browser. The remix tool is powered by Adobe. It's the same as Photobucket's Remix tool, which is also powered by Adobe. So if you've become a pro with the Photobucket remixing tool, you'll have no trouble with YouTube's. Many of the effects and graphics are similar to that of Phot …
