2007-10-30 12:04 Uni Watch Book Club: The Football Book
New ESPN column today - here's the link. Meanwhile: For months now people have been telling me to pick up a copy of The Football Book, part of a series of coffee table books produced by Sports Illustrated. Last week I finally got around to getting a copy, and sure enough, it's loaded with great uni-related photos. The only problem is that the book is too big to fit in my scanner, so I had to take photos of the pages. Here's a sampling: As you'd expect, there are lots of great helmet photos. Amon …

2007-10-19 10:21 Corbin on the Aryan-Sufic Hyperborean Paradise, the Midnight Sun and the Grail
From Henry Corbin, Spiritual Body and Celestial Earth (trans. Nancy Pearson, Princeton University Press, 1989, pps. 71-72). "...That is why the progression, which this mode of thought makes it possible for us to conceive, is not a horizontal linear evolution, but an ascent from cycle to cycle, from one octave to a higher octave. A few pages from the same Shaikh, which have been translated here, illustrate this. The spiritual history of humanity since Adam is the cycle of prophecy following the c …

2007-10-17 19:48 Yahoo Reinvents Web Advertising : Lands WebMD, Forbes.com, Cars.com and Ziff Davis
Yahoo Search Marketing has landed a high dollar vertical search partner in WebMD, which will be serving Yahoo sponsored search results across its medical network of WebMD properties including WebMD Health, MedicineNet, eMedicine Health and RxList. As part of the agreement, WebMD will extend its advertising reach to include WebMD users across Yahoo! properties and services, which is an interesting deal. What it means is that Yahoo will provide display advertising to WebMD consumer sites. However, …

2007-10-17 09:44 Sidwell Friends School, Anatomy of a Green School
The Sidwell Friends School is the first LEED Platinum-rated K-12 school in the world, but what's incredible is the story behind it. First, it's a renovation of a fifty year old facility. Second, the renovation involved the students, so everyone was able to participate and learn about the benefits of a green building. Matter of fact, about sixteen 5th - 8th graders studied the building, wrote about its benefits, and recorded an audio feature explaining each green feature. Feel free to take th …

2007-10-16 05:40 The "Fabless" Software Industry
Has the software industry forgotten the art of writing and packaging enterprise solutions Vista. SAP SOA. 5+ year initiatives. And still works in progress. Oracle and IBM mostly buying other software companies rather than building new product. With the promise that the M&A binge will bring shared service economies in various SG&A areas. Yet SG&A is still 5 to 10 times investments in new product development. While those are trends which should bother every CIO, goodness is gradually happening in …

2007-10-15 10:14 Outsourcers and Innovation
CIO Magazine has a nice, long article asking why while outsourcers talk innovation, they really cannot deliver it. I would like to add 4 perspectives: a) The best innovations outsourcers can deliver are in their own operations The outsourcing supply chain is hugely inefficient. In spite of massive scale - as I point out in this note on Utility Computing - outsourcers cannot or choose not to deliver economies from that scale. In case of many western providers it is due to other inefficiencies and …

Got back from my DofE expedition yesterday and am suitably sore. Walked 65k (way more than we were meant to due to various obstacles) in three days. Most of it involved walking up hills in order to walk down the other side and then back up again. I also managed to get very badly sunburnt on my arms, neck, face and ears - N.B. one coat of factor 25 in the morning does not last the whole day. The redness is starting to turn to tan now though, so should be ok. Walking in a group of 4 guys and me wa …

My hair (which is huge) is thick with the smell of cigar smoke. In the distance, I can barely make out the throb of "My Humps" (What you gon' do with all that junk, all that junk inside your trunk If you have not seen the Alanis Morisette version, you must.) I've had a glass of wine, and a shot of tequila, but I'm home and on the computer. I'm not sure, but I think I might actually have become a grown-up. Tonight was/is the winery's annual post-harvest party. I came home from work, had a little …

2007-10-13 03:39 She s so Beautiful!!! My Encounter With the Airbus A380
History was made last October 11 and 12 when the World's Largest Passenger Aircraft, the Airbus A380 MSN009, first landed on Philippine soil. On October 11, the aircraft touched down at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport ( NAIA ) at about 2:45 pm and remained there overnight to be serviced by airport personnel. I went to Diosdado Macapagal International Airport ( DMIA ), also known as Clark Airport, to see up close the most sophisticated commercial airliner today. The aircraft was expected t …

2007-10-12 09:34 GNOME panel analog clock
I've been using for vertical panel for quite a while, and keep wondering why those GNOME people removed analog clock entirely and don't even consider porting it to GNOME 2. Being afraid of writing one myself, I keep searching on net to no avail. Recently noticed MacSlow s Cairo-Clock and it's quite beautiful; but hell no, it doesn't work without compiz! However luck is on my side; Joachim Breitner has got one. But the patch is for GNOME 2.12, so I anticipate some effort to port it to 2.18 and I' …

Yup, I've been busy! Here's another corset I just completed on Wednesday. This was a commission for a girl whose favourite colour is blue. When she saw the beautiful shimmery blue fabric I had, we had to figure out a way of incorporating it into the corset without overdoing it and making the corset too 'loud'. Rachel really liked the idea of an overlay fabric to tone the colour down and blend it in with the black satin that the main corset would be made from. We also decided to add piping und …

I recently completed the following corset for a client. When she said she wanted something in silver I was super excited because I have been just waiting for a good enough excuse to cut into a beautiful silver dupion I've had for a couple of years now. The corset is bound in black dupion and has thin black lattice trim stitched down the seam between the 1st/2nd panels. It gives her a lovely shape and the dupion has such a great sheen to it. This corset features: 1x fashion layer fused t …

HandBrake is my favorite DVD ripper. The guys over at handbrake.m0k.org have done a terrific job. DVD ripping can be such a thorny hard to approach issue. This semester, I am taking two classes Found. of Image and Sound and New Media Production at Emerson College. We began the Found. of Image and Sound class, by watching several scenes from Alfred Hitchcock's Rope. Here's the thing, the film was ripped by HandBrake.
