2007-09-30 13:17  The Spectrum
Last month, an unexpected but welcome invitation to speak on Journalism Ethics at the The 4th Spectrum Fellowship: National Campus Journalism Conference came. Since it was conveniently in the last week of the semester, I readily said yes even as I thought it would be a good opportunity to catch up on some old friends there. The Fellowship was held last weekend from Sept. 27-29 at the La Salle University campus in Bacolod. My talk was on day 2, right after Vim Navarro, who trained the student jou …

2007-08-27 02:56  Matter of Taste
this is the fourth time that this email was forwarded to me. it was funny the first time I read it, and I still find it funny after reading it the fourth time, so i decided to share. written by a British journalist in 1999 while stationed in the Philippines, it is a funny anecdote about us, the Filipino. Matter of Taste by Matthew Sutherland I have now been in this country for over six years, and consider myself in most respects well assimilated. However, there is one key step on the road to ful …

Below was one of my original list of the things that a former female colleague of mine in the previous company and my former landlady here in Makati, thought and perceive about the different adjectives that they could imagine and misconceptions they knew about my hometown, Davao City. Below the items are the comments of my good friend, Rex Villa. I hope these information will give change the perception of those who don't know much about Davao, and Mindanao. > 1.) 2007-08-25 15:43  All the world's a PETA stage...
My first taste of theater was in my freshman year at the University of the Philippines in the Visayas. I saw a play by resident UPV theater group, Teatro Amakan, which I think was entitled "Baloy" or something like it. I enjoyed it immensely, even though it was dialoged in pure Hiligaynon. No matter, I enjoyed it and the storyline and humor hit all the right notes. I had a blast and was raving about it for weeks. I never thought a PETA production would be as enlightening as they said it would be …

2007-08-19 13:22  The Chinese as migrant worker in the Philippines
Two weeks ago, I was at the UP University Press Bookstore looking for Nick Joaquin's biography of Senator Angara when, while browsing the shelves, I came across Bai Ren's Lagalag sa Nanyang translated from the Chinese to Filipino by Joaquin Sy. Lagalag sa Nanyang (Nanyang Piaoliuji) is an autobiographical novel, a Bildungsroman, told by A Song, a boy from a small village in China who left the country in 1932 when he was only ten years old to look for work in the Philippines. He took on the jobs …

2007-08-17 08:24  Thoughts on Mindanao
I only got back on my feet after being ill since the weekend, hence no recent updates. It couldn't have been a worse week to get sick: so much is happening! Some stories and related links must suffice. 1. Cash-strapped gov t to expand lifestyle check to private citizens. And this: Optimism among elites waning. No connection between the two stories, though. 2. The worldwide market jitters (note that concern had already been widely-discussed in the media; the whole thing, if you recall my March 2 …

That's it. The weather's gone to the dogs. The rain's been pretty much off and on until today, where it pretty much rained all day. You guys must've seen this before, but man, I can't seem to get enough of them. ^o^ The prisoners in Cebu (At CPDRC, I believe), one of the main Visayas islands here in the Philippines adopted this project not for show but for the complete annihilation of gangs and illegal stuff in prison. So they deviced this method of dancing every morning. they practice at least one hour everyday so they could come up with amazingly choreographed moves free people would most probably envy. It's the order that …

How do you wish you where there first, before the boom comes What I mean is, how would you wish to be able to invest in Boracay, 30 years ago, when it was cheap then Or bought Google shares on its first day of trading Yeah...I know Google is too far off as an example...where talking here about resorts and real state. OK there is a chance, not in Boracay but in Calicoan. This island will probably be the next Boracay in the Visayas. On the news: Tacloban City (PIA) (August 12) -- A sanctuary of pr …

The first thing which comes to mind when someone mentions Iligan City in Lanao del Norte is the majestic Maria Cristina Falls which is one of the most replendent among the falls in the Philippines. It stands 320 feet high and is the veritable source of industrial power in the region. Trust me, there's more to Iligan than just the Maria Cristina Falls... There's also the two-tiered Limunsudan Falls which is the highest in the country that measures 870 feet and several other waterfalls which are a …

2007-08-10 08:40  A way forward for the Cyber Ed Project
My column for this week's issue of Vox Bikol. Last in a series. SO, HOW can we make the Cyber Education Project (CEP) more attuned to Philippine realities on the ground I already discussed opposing views on the CEP, its upsides and downsides, and the institutional requirements to make it work. Let me outline how we can move it forward. Its core should focus on high school. The technology is best suited to high school students. At that level, having the country s top scientists, mathematicians an …

2007-08-08 00:18  Cyber Ed Project: Upsides and downsides
OK, BEFORE I proceed, this Inquirer story this morning, among others, says that the Cyber Education Project (CEP) has not been finalized yet, and the requisite papers are still being pushed through the bureaucracy. Which is good since any discussion of its merits can hopefully make it better. The upsides Like this June 4, 2007 editorial of the Inquirer, I too can sympathize with the CEP and Secretary Lapus's bold vision, but for a different reason: the idea, I think, was inspired by this article …
