2007-10-14 03:00 The most urgent threat to Taiwan is in Taiwan
In his recent blog Ben Findlay wrote Why should I care about Taiwan's geopolitical future, in which he talked about his observation on the lack of Taiwanese effort on the international platform: Yes, Taiwan continuously tries to enter international bodies. Yes, there is going to be a referendum on the UN question. Yes, there are regular protests and marches against Chinese threats. But how is any standard westerner supposed to know about the convictions of Taiwan s population Where is the prolif …

2007-10-12 19:10 The Iranian inferiority complex - Nobel Prize edition
According to the Iranian Fars news agency :The Nobel Prize in Literature for 2007 was awarded to Doris Lessing, an English writer of Iranian origin. Lessing who was born in Iran's western province of Kermanshah is now a citizen of Britain. Now, her real biography says :Doris Lessing was born Doris May Tayler in Persia (now Iran) on October 22, 1919. Both of her parents were British: her father, who had been crippled in World War I, was a clerk in the Imperial Bank of Persia; her mother had been …

2007-10-12 14:38 Rafsanjani, the "moderate"
œEurope resolved a great problem - the problem of the Zionist Danger. The Zionists, who constituted a strong political party in Europe, caused much disorder there. ( Someone has known about a Zionist European political party in 1900 ) Since they had a lot of property and controlled an empire of propaganda, they made the European governments helpless ( oops, I'm learning so much "European History" today). What Hitler and the German Nazis did to the Jews of Europe at that time was partly due to th …

2007-09-27 00:21 Muslim Women Slaves in Denial
Iranian woman beaten for not wearing veil (click on image for more photos). Denial is a defense mechanism for those who, when faced with a fact that is too painful to accept, reject it outright and insist that it cannot be true despite overwhelming evidence. This is most plainly seen among those of the Muslim faith. I will for a moment ignore the vile Muslim practice of willful deceit or al Taqiyya such as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's statement yesterday, "If the US withdraws from Iraq, good things wil …

Sorry but I have recycled some material from my previous post here. I was going to take it down but it has alreadyelicited some thoughtful responses so there it stands as a testament to the ahem creative process( lack of imagination) A report has concluded that political correctness allowed a pair of homosexual foster parents to sexually abuse children in their care,( Adapted from the Telegraph article ). Social workers were reluctant to investigate Craig Faunch and Ian Wathey for fear of being …

2007-09-03 17:13 South Korean troops in Vietnam
Airlift of Maeng Ho Cavalry Regiment I've been looking through the Time Magazine archives about Korea in the 1970s and found a few articles about Korean troops in Vietnam. The photos are from this website, which can be read in Korean or English. The first article, from July 22, 1966, is about the other foreign troops in Vietnam, and is titled ' Other Guns '. One recent night, South Korean 1st Lieut. Lee Young Woong looked into a peasant cottage as a woman and her two children were eating their e …

2007-08-31 19:01 Whiplash: Zakka Pocket Pouch
Now when I read about this month's Whiplash Challenge I wasn't sure what to make because zakka is a hard concept to completely grok as a Westerner. I tend to think that it's something with a practical use, but made to be either very beautiful or very cute. That may not be the correct definition but it's one that I can live with. I've seen quite a few of these darling pouches this past month that were inspired by a Japanese craft book ... here here, and here. Leslie Molen had some with applique …

2007-08-26 17:22 The Kampo boom, traditional Japanese phytotherapy comes of age
Of the many ancient holistic medical systems that have withstood the test of time, Kampo is one of the more successful ones, particularly in Japan. In a nationwide study of Japanese mainstream medical practitioners performed in October 2000, 72 percent regularly used Kampo medicines. Today, nearly 150 Kampo drugs are available for reimbursement under Japan s National Health Insurance (NHI) program. Kampo is slowly making inroads into the West as well. The roots of Kampo are embedded in Chinese m …

2007-08-24 05:37 Christians In Kosovo
I occasionally make references to Kosovo, even though it's off-topic. Eastern Europe is still Europe, and the presence of a Muslim enclave, set up and backed by Western powers, cannot be swept under the rug. The fate of Christians in lands conquered by Islam - in particular, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey, and Kosovo, is a common topic at French websites. It is a complex topic that validates the reasonableness of ethnic separation, and the unreasonableness of forcing different groups to live together in …

My Blog Is One Year Old! Sing Along With This Cute Video! So what IS a blog Wikipedia says: A blog (a portmanteau of web log) is a website where entries are written in chronological order and commonly displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. Blogs provide commentary or news on a particular subject such as food, politics, or local news; some function as more personal online diaries. A typical blog combines text, ima …

2007-08-23 21:31 Amanpour s Quasi-Journalism
There always is some slant in a news story, a slant that changes merely according to the agenda of of the news outlet that tells the story. Quite often, the slant reveals the false premises, omissions, half truths and outright lies of the reporter. CNN is featuring a three part series called God's Warriors on religious fundamentalism among Jews, Christians and Muslims. The first part, on Jewish fundamentalism played this week and CAMERA who reports on media distortions vis a vis Israel has this …

2007-08-23 12:15 Horton, Rich (ed.): Fantasy: The Best of Year, 2007
A lot of decent but unexciting stories, and a few which are significantly better than the rest, namely: Both Peter Beagle's "Salt Wine" and Jeffrey Ford's "The Night Whiskey" end up more complicated and therefore more affecting than I expected half-way through, although I'm not sure Beagle manages to quite avoid making the woman in his story The Woman rather than a person. The M. Rickert story is like a lot of her work: beautiful prose and characterization, in that odd Todorov-ian slipstream spa …

2007-08-22 21:17 WESTERNERS: CONFUSION AS THE GREAT OUTDOORS IS TRANSFORMED
The West has been booming for years. Lots of people moving in, new development projects everywhere and no end in sight. Nevada has led the nation in growth for the past 19 years. Idaho ranked third for the 2004-2005 Census. And St. George, Utah, was the top in the nation for population gains between 2000 and 2005.Nevada officials said they weren't surprised with their top ranking because all they do is deal with growth. That sort of news sounds good to lots of people in other places, but if you' …

2007-08-22 02:49 Excerpt from an e-mail I sent a white male friend
I'm not wary of white guys who hit on Asian girls in general because I want to "get back at them"; I'm wary because I think it would be foolish not to be. Kipling has a horrible story that was in my Victorian Love Stories anthology -- God knows why it was there: either to depress Asian readers, or to depress English readers by reminding them what bastards they were -- about this English guy who goes out to Vietnam. He's a confirmed bachelor, but when he's in Vietnam he picks up a local girl and …

He: Is this yes or is this no, under current legislation She: Vorrei e non vorrei, silly. He: Does that mean yes or no She: Maybe. Welshcakes is a wonderful person and I'd like to play gentleman to her ladyship. She may feel differently after reading this but I simply had to post it, I'm afraid. On the question of a man's sexual self-control, she says: The fact that a girl or woman dresses or acts provocatively is NEVER an excuse - how about men being able to control themselves This reply is in …

Best known for the classic crime revenge novel Death Wish and the series of movies it inspired, Brian Garfield (1939) is a versatile and accomplished writer. Having published nearly 70 books throughout a career spanning nearly five decades, he has been nominated for and won numerous literary prizes. These include the Edgar Allan Poe Award of the Mystery Writers of America (MWA) for his novel Hopscotch (1976). 2007-08-18 13:01 About Michael Yon's Report -- Somewhat Belated
Thanks to Joel I was made aware that there is another report about one of those hard-to-believe atrocities the media (and not even just the mainstream media) seems to shun. I had covered one of those cases in April on the strength of Robert Spencer's (who had reported it first) authority, but made my readers later aware that the only source was taken down from the website. Robert Spencer took his blog entry down as well, although, so he said, he trusted the source. Now Michael Yon, an independen …

I guess this is the place to say it. I mean..this is my journal and I should be free to talk about anything I feel like without worrying about anything. I guess I will just talk about the crisis in South Asia. It's digging away at my heart everytime I read a story or even THINK about the plight of the families and children back home. I call it home because I'm from Kerala which is in South India. Kerala didn't get hit that back compared to other places but a few hundred are dead and my family i …

2007-08-18 01:06 Michael Totten Reports From Iraq--A Must Read!
Michael Totten and Michael Yon are the two most reliable reporters recently or currently inside Iraq. Totten's latest dispatch is must reading for anyone wanting to dispense with his own prejudices about Iraq, and read Totten's harsh blend of optimism and pessimism that is modern Iraq. œThey act like our friends, said Master Sergeant Tyler. œIt is a façade to an extent, yes. They get benefits from having a good relationship with us and will do and say anything to keep us on their side. I hea …

2007-08-17 10:03 U.S. says forget it on Khadr
Of course they did. Now the question is what will Harper say, if anything, to Bush about Gitmo and Khadr, an issue that is ripening in Canada: The White House signalled yesterday it is adamant that Canadian terror suspect Omar Khadr face justice at Guantanamo Bay, where he remains the only Westerner being held at the U.S. military prison in Cuba. By reiterating that the military court process will play out in the case of the 20-year-old Toronto man, the Bush administration was launching a pre-em …

As if Idaho firefighters don't have enough on their minds with a large number of wildfires raging throughout the state and unions in general taking heat as the Crandall Canyon mine disaster continues to develop, they are worrying about their freshman congressman, Bill Sali, as well. On the website of the Professional Fire Fighters of Idaho, you can find an article about Sali's comments on the Hindu prayer offered in the U.S. Senate as well as the text of the actual prayer offered by Rajan Zed. 2007-08-14 23:53 It would suck a lot.
I use lots of folksy Western idioms in my speech; those are almost entirely an affectation, since I grew up in suburban Los Angeles. Still, I tell myself that I am a daughter of the West, and appropriating those is less of a cultural stretch than adopting, for example, the trickled down speech of black urban youth.
