2007-10-12 10:00  Libel Terrorism's Midway
Here's an interesting article from BBC News, Book author wins historic libel case, by Torin Douglas, Media correspondent. The author of a book about police corruption has won a ground-breaking libel case in the Court of Appeal. Three judges found in favour of Graham McLagan and his publisher, Orion, overturning an earlier judgement against a former Flying Squad officer, Michael Charman. That ruling found that Mr Charman had been libelled in the book Bent Coppers - The Inside Story Of Scotland Ya …

2007-09-04 00:00  Grown Up SF
On my recent trip to the US I went to some bookstores to buy books that are hard (or expensive) to buy over here. [We will ignore the eBooks for $5 rant and settle for the world as it is] Anyway I bought the third book in Scalzi's Old Man's War series "The Lost Colony" as well as the first three of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series (Ender's Game, Speaker For The Dead, Xenocide). For reasons that are somewhat obscure, but boil down to DFW's completely crap selection of books, I read Speaker …

2007-08-31 03:53  How I Found My Favorite Author...
As I mentioned the other day, Becky is hosting a challenge that officially begins in January 2008 called the Cardathon Challenge which focuses on books written by, introduced by, edited by, or reviewed by my favorite author, Orson Scott Card. As a part of this challenge, she made the suggestion that fans of Orson Scott Card share their stories of how they came to know and love this author, and I thought that it was such a neat idea! So here's my story. My first "meeting" with Orson Scott Card wa …

2007-08-29 05:17  Calling for a Boycott of of AAP - Association of American Publishers
If you have not seen the wonderful news about the latest anti Open Access initiative called PRISM, well you should surf around the blogosphere a bit. PRISM is a group started by the AAP - the Association of American Publishers that - there is no nice way to put this - is a sad stage in the evolution of publishing. Basically, it is a Macarthy-Era ripoff where Open Access is the new evil that communism once was. And everything wrong with the world is in essence blamed on the Open Access movement. …

"Maybe the get-rich scheme inside the Marvel world is to open a friggin' dojo. In the hood." - Marc Bernardin (link via Kevin Melrose )   Hey comics aficionados: A significant cache of previously unavailable back issues of The Comics Journal were recently found in the dusty corners of the Fantagraphics warehouse, and we've put them up for sale. Mike Baehr has the details. Not only did I not get back to writing reviews last week, it's looking like I won't be able to do it this week, either, as th …

2007-08-11 18:23  Birthday Weekend
I'm back! It turns out that Andy really did pleasantly surprise me on my birthday. He told me that he was going to take me some place, but he wouldn't tell me where. Of course I knew it couldn't be too far, since Andy has to be back to work on Monday. That pretty much confined it to an overnighter, and there are only so many places where you can go for an overnight trip leaving by car from the Pioneer Valley. When I tried to guess beforehand what Andy had up his sleeve, I considered two main pos …

Mondesi's House found this video a while back, but I can't stop watching it, and I figured to put it in a place I could get to easily. A couple of things that get to me on this vid - Sally Wiggin - has she aged in the last 20 years Except for her hairstyle, I can't see a whole lot of change. Paulsen's story about walking down the street in Paris is priceless, but it is amazing how quickly your ears can become tuned to that accent. I get phone calls from all over the country, and within the first …

I got back from my very satisfying visit to Godric's Hollow and Ottery St. Catchpole to discover that the spectacular Bubandpie had tagged me for the best meme ever. "Maternal love, like an orange tree, buds and blossoms and bears at once. When a woman puts her finger for the first time into the tiny hand of her baby and feels that helpless clutch which tightens her very heartstrings, she is born again with her newborn child." -- Author:Kate Douglas Wiggin I found this quote, and it is so true...................... no matter what our prodigal does, those heartstrings are still there.......... even if oh so very thin................... and sometimes we need t …

2007-07-11 02:54  Ender's Game
It is time to talk about an old friend. Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. A novel that has become without a doubt my most favorite book in the entire world. Okay, so you might think I'm a bit overly dramatic at times. (I've been told this countless times.) But this time, I really, really mean it. (You still don't believe me, do you) To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born. No, I wasn't born loving Ender's Game, but sometimes it feels like it. (Yes, it was that lif …

2007-07-04 22:17  I Swear, Always the Last to Know
So a few weeks ago, back during the "Digby has ovaries!" brouhaha, somebody said that they were a little sad that the reveal wasn't a bigger deal, akin to Demosthenes coming out as Peter in Ender's Game. Ezra Klein, saying "people have no sense of history", reminded everybody that I, er, still exist :Better not call her Demosthenes. Demosthenes is a grandfather of the blogosphere. If I'm not wrong, he's the first lefty blogger I ever read. And I remember being stunned -- genuinely astonished -- …

Link Zoo assistant editor Steve Nash, claims, amongst many things : "Unfortunately there have been occasions in the past where people have claimed that an image was theirs and have demanded substantial payments but have failed to produce anything sufficient to back up their claims." Well, there's a long story attached to this which is partially covered by previous EMAP posts. Link to previous post …

Dessa tvĺ unga talangfulla herrar vid namn James Zabiela och Nic Fanciulli har sedan ungefär ett halvĺr tillbaka huserat tillsammans bakom sina cd-spelare, laptops och effektboxar under namnet One+One.
