Link: West Wing: The Comeback of a War President - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News. "He may be America's most unpopular politician, but George W. Bush is no lame duck. As a wartime president, Bush dominates the political agenda. He is discreetly influencing his party's choice of presidential candidate while committing his country to an aggressive foreign policy, the effects of which are likely to continue well beyond his term in office."

2007-09-06 17:52 9/6: Law & Disorder
Without his Law & Order fame, Fred Thompson probably would not even be in the race, but it is also possible that the contrast between the scripted, made up, well lighted Arthur Branch, and the live, admittedly wrinkly Thompson could cost him the race before he even gets going. More than a few conservatives voiced concern over Thompson's appearance last night, and there is a strong possibility that voters will also be underwhelmed by the non-Arthur Branch version of Thompson. Perhaps more importa …

2007-08-29 14:17 George: "Dear Sen. McConnell: Will You Help Us Stop The War"
Stephen George, managing editor at LEO, wrote the following piece about last night's anti-war rally in Louisville and the accompanying march of 300 demonstrators from Bellarmine University (where the rally took place) to the home of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell (R). Stephen has permitted me to publish the entire piece along with photos that he took (click each photo for larger versions). Dear Sen. McConnell: Will You Help Us Stop The War By Stephen George The police have just told us to join the …

2007-08-20 04:03 Saddlebums Interview: Brian Garfield
Best known for the classic crime revenge novel Death Wish and the series of movies it inspired, Brian Garfield (1939) is a versatile and accomplished writer. Having published nearly 70 books throughout a career spanning nearly five decades, he has been nominated for and won numerous literary prizes. These include the Edgar Allan Poe Award of the Mystery Writers of America (MWA) for his novel Hopscotch (1976). The story was the basis for a movie of the same name starring Walter Matthau and Glenda …

Thomas F. Schaller: How Strong Is The Democratic Presidential Field Right now, the Republican primary field is a mess. Insufficient cash flows, fleeing staffers and consultants, outdated themes and proposals, legitimacy issues with the party's conservative base, expressed unease from the GOP's dying moderate wing and, of course, a variety of problems arising from proximity to a certain incumbent president--each of the Republican candidates is suffering from at least one of those ailments. So it' …

2007-08-07 07:34 John Huston: A Prolific Filmmaker With Some Brilliant Works
I was pleased to discover this appreciation of one of my favorite filmmakers, John Huston, on the World Socialist Web Site. Huston was never a show-off filmmaker so he was generally ignored as an artist. A true film artist causes a person to forget a film is being viewed. As soon as you say to yourself, "Wow! Look at that camera move or spectacular crane shot" you are pulled out of the film illusion. Too many modern filmmakers think technical wizardry is what says talent. In my opinion, this is …

2007-08-01 20:09 Newt Gingrich pisses on Detroit
The truth Newt Gingrich wasn't all the way wrong in his criticism of Detroit when it came to what he said about Detroit Public Schools, and any Detroiter with eyes knows this, even if he/she won't admit it out loud. This isn't about whether or not we love Detroit, it's about whether or not we can face up to the truth and deal with it. Now. Having said that, I wanna be clear about a few things regarding Gingrich. Number one Can't stand the man. Number two Hell no I'm not a Republican. Moving ri …

2007-07-25 12:57 Jeri Thompson "Trophy Wife," Not First Lady Material NPR Commentators Way Out of Line
One of the mainstays of the liberal philosophy is the concept of equality for all humans from all walks of life. That is a starting point that most of us can agree upon, as long as you further define it as meaning equality "under the law," rather than an assumption that all humans really are equal in intelligence, abilities and energy. So far that makes me a liberal. The concept further dictates that we should all have equal opportunities to aspire to whatever segment of the American dream most …

2007-07-13 16:26 When Harry was young
Since the new Harry Potter movie is out and the last book is almost out I wanted to tell you all my favorite Harry Potter story. I've been hooked for quite awhile on Ms. Rowling's books and the movie versions of same, I'm not a snob like some adults are about the Potter books. They may not be "great literature," but honestly, who the hell reads that shit anyway I like the story and the underlying themes of good versus evil and friendship versus duty. Anyway, I was hyped up like crazy to see the …

"George let me tell you something. When I find something I like I stick with it. From 1973 to 1982 I ate the exact same lunch everyday. Turkey chili in a bowl made out of bread. Bread bowl George. First you eat the chili then you eat the bowl. There's nothing more satisfying than looking down after lunch and seeing nothing but a table." Hello to everyone in Toasty Joe Land!! 2007-07-12 01:25 Top Plays During the Carr Era
The Wolverine last week listed the top plays during the Carr era- basically 1 play per year. While the content is premium, therefore not going to be posted here, I have compiled my own list of plays, which was a lot tougher than one would think. So, here's the list, along with my thought process for each. These are the most memorable, and those with the largest impact. Not necessarily the most important or spectacular. 1995: Lloyd's inaugural season began with one of the most memorable games in …

2007-07-08 18:26 TV: Global Boring
NBC decided to broadcast three hours of Live Earth Saturday. As opposed to the usual Dead One We were going to skip the musical wax works, we actually weren't even aware it was airing. Everyone knows not to bore us with pseudo activism. At least we thought that was the case. Two calls, out of many, persuaded us. So Al Snore's back and NBC had him. Three hours of remedial television dedicated to global warming but playing out like global boring taught audiences at least two things. First, those S …
