2007-11-07 16:58  Starting something new!
Ich bin so gelangweilt. So schrecklich langweilig war mir noch nie. Was ich alles tun könne jetzt. Gitarrespielen lernen. Mein Zimmer anmalen.

University life is still hectic but I'm getting used to it once again (when I'm completely settled it will be time for Christmas holls, clearly) and today I found the time to put Pride & Prejudice in my mp3 and now I can listen to Elizabeth and Darcy bicker all day long. *glows* Besides that, I felt like memeing, so here it is, pass by if you shall :) - * those you have read - + those you started, but didn't finish - # those you own Embolden those you loved - Add three books after the last one 0 …

Movin' On Up… Movin 'On Up ... When I first got to Baghdad, I was living in a place called "Tent City" – a dreary, depressing collection of long, green tents. Als ich erstmals nach Bagdad, war ich in einem Ort namens "Tent City" - ein trostlos, deprimierend Sammlung von langen, grünen Zelten. There are actual beds in these tents, though they're really poor quality, with smelly, rumpled mattresses. Es gibt tatsächlich Betten in diesen Zelten, wenn sie wirklich schlechte Qualität, mit stinkenden, …

2007-10-10 23:07  Top Ten Albums #8 and #7
The next two in my personal Top Ten are below. Number Eight: I went to see Garbage on the first night of their last tour, and they were great. And they were great, indeed, and this album proves it. It's likely to be the band's last ever album, except perhaps for a reunion album in about 2020 when Shirley Manson's gone grey and the others are getting about in Zimmer frames. But it's a fantastic album, because it's so very different from the others. Garbage are chiefly known as a kind of electroni …

2007-09-27 14:45  Science Tattoos
It would seem that even scientists aren't above putting a little ink in their skin. Carl Zimmer, who is the owner of The Loom science blog (as well as the author of several very good pop-sci books ), asked if any scientists, in his audience, had tattoos. The response was so overwhelming that he created this very cool Flikr collection of the tattoos .

2007-09-07 03:50  Tell the Story!
When I first started writing in college, I sent a story to Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine. I got back a personal rejection letter. Not realizing how rare those were, I've since lost it, but I do remember one line, a piece of advice she said she received as a novice writer that she now passed on to me: Stop showing me how good you can write and tell me a story! As writers of Christian fiction, we need to keep in mind the corollary to that: Stop showing folks how good a Christian you (or …

2007-09-04 02:02  Two Vignettes
Happy Labor Day everyone. Here's a pair of vignettes from our signup stories. The first, from John Burland (who did a nice write-up of Buzzword on his blog, You Must Be From Away ), provides a shining example of off-beat native New Zealand humor: I was orphaned at an early age (my grandparents - childless, unfortunately - went down with the Titanic.) Is that good enough No OK, read about Buzzword on Wired, need desperately something that's as good as this and I PROMISE that I'll tell all the oth …

2007-08-31 23:04  Prison blogging
One of the goals of Global Voices was to give people on the Internet access to voices they might not otherwise hear. For us, this has meant amplifying, translating and contextualizing voices from every corner of the world where someone has been blogging. Early in our project, I'd hoped that we'd be able to feature the voices of bloggers in prison. There are more than 9 million people in prison worldwide - that's a much larger population than many nations we cover. (By the way, the US is the worl …

2007-08-31 09:30  Volkswagen Thing, with Bonus Beetle Poll!
This is another one of those cars that's just impossible for me to get the year pinned down. The Thing was sold in the US for the 1973 and 1974 model years only, so it's almost certainly a '73 or '74 (though someone could have imported an earlier one from Mexico or Europe). So, VW experts, here's your chance to shine! What year is this Thing I know of several Things in Alameda (including one that's been lowered so much that it has about 1/4" of ground clearance), but this was one was the first I …

2007-08-31 01:24  Cyphophthalmids Wait for the Mountain to Come to Them
Carl Zimmer beat me to it. I was planning to announce the recent pettalid work after the paper arrived in the mail last week, but it seems I've been scooped. But because good work always deserves a second look, I'll write on it anyway. Besides, I was at least able to pinch the photo from Carl's site. Pettalidae are a family of Cyphophthalmi, what are called the mite-like harvestmen. Cyphophthalmids are a fairly small group as far as is known, with probably less than fifty described species, but …

2007-08-29 18:23  Summer Reading
The short stretch between June and August is one of the few times I have a chance to read some non-work related fiction. This summer I found two novels that I would highly recommend you add to your own list. 1. Paul Auster, The Book of Illusions The best way I can describe this book is as a highly literary analogue to Stephen King's Langoliers (a book longtime readers of ITM will recall from Eileen's comments and post ). Having lost his wife and two sons in a plane crash, a professor of English …

2007-08-28 10:00  Freedom! (She yells in a bad Scottish accent)
So tomorrow my kids go back to school. For the tall kid, we're a little BTDT since he's going into seventh grade, but the short kid-he's going into first grade. Full-time days. 8:50-3:15. There was much moping among the other post-kindergarten moms, who seemed to be lost and depressed at the concept of their children being gone all day. I nodded and made sympathetic clucking noises, but all the while I was thinking... Are you people freakin' crazy I've been a stay-at-home mom for twelve years, a …

What a great concept for a column by Virginia Postrel: the way that TV is changing the image of the scientist. Her opening: a 1957 survey of images about scientists carried out by Margaret Mead: The number of ways in which the image of the scientist contains extremes which appear to be contradictory -- too much contact with money or too little; being bald or bearded; confined to work indoors, or traveling far away; talking all the time in a boring way, or never talking at all -- all represent de …

Random House, Inc., announced Monday that it was donating $1 million to First Book, a nonprofit organization that has given millions of books to needy children since its founding in 1992. "As publishing professionals who spend our days surrounded by and immersed in books, it is difficult to imagine a world without them," Random House chairman Peter Olson said in a statement. Here is the list, minus the poetry anthologies, of all the books that were damaged.  If the book is struck-through, that means that I have already been able to replace that particular book.  I've tagged it to make it easy to find later on.  *sighs*  So many books....I just want to weep.  They …
